I have a 1983 Trek 720, which I bought new. I've ridden this bike pretty hard over the years. It's anything but a pristine version of its original self. I have switched parts in all sorts of configurations. It still runs like a champ and has only (I think/hope) surface rust on the frame.

Can anyone recommend someone to perform a quality paint job--including the re-creation of decals?

I'm also toying with the idea of another color other than the original very muted gray. But part of me feels like that would be semi-sacriligious. Anybody got any thoughts along those lines?

Thanks!

Cycleart.com should have you covered.

BF'er mswantak should be able to set you up with decals, see if there are any fairly local frame builders in the area who also do paint work. Another idea would be to have the frame powder coated locally and apply the reproduction decals on top of the powder. Would be a bit more durable than paint. Shipping a frame two ways to someone to have the paint work done ups the cost a fair bit and introduces a larger risk of damage during transit.

I asked this very question in BF and some of the guys thought that powder coating is so thick that it would ruin the looks of the lug work. I'm waiting for this winter before I do a re-paint on my Trek. Good luck on your project Blackberry.

no no no, NO!
don't powdercoat, if it isn't done correctly it will
cause more damage than good.
besides the Trek deserves better than that.
Original paint was probably Imron, not many folks
use it since its pretty toxic stuff.
You don't need Cyclart, you want someone a bit
more local.
Highly recommend the Pfeiffers at www.Koolbikes.com
reasonable prices and can do decals if Mike can't.
They are in South Carolina, approx two week turnaround,
and won't try to sell you repairs or restorations you don't need.
