Every year someone taps Iban Mayo to be a contender and every year he cracks and is worthless early. Why does anyone think this guy has it? First big climb of the Tour and he is off the back and his team mates are actually PUSHING him up the mountain...I can't wait to watch this this evening. :D

Yea but that doesn't explain every other year he has floundered...other than what was it 2003?

nah, grasschopper is right. i don't understand why this guy seems to have a good build-up to the tour, his DS is hopeful, and he comes apart on the first climb. third year in a row now. maybe he just can't take the pressure

I actually feel sorry for him in some way. As you said, every year he is tapped to be a contender and the last three he has been a disaster. I think it's all in his head now, that he can't compete and his body just quits on him at the first sign of difficulty. After his big win on that stage a few years back there was a huge spread in CycleSport about him, how he was ready, etc. etc. I think that actually put the elephant on his back. He liked to be the unknown who won from the back, but couldn't handle being the frontrunner.

mayo has been on fire before. he's very talented and can win races. however, the tour is almost always disasterous for him. i think he should focus on other events and support someone else in the tour.
