Robbie has a much higher profile so the crit promoters want him there & so I guess will pay him well just for turning up. He is also a genuine chance to win, wheras Gerro is not a sprinter so crits aren't really where he will shine. I think I saw him in the footage at the crit series up at Noosa & the Gold Coast though.

I think you'll see him at the Bay Crit series too..

ahhhh ok I didnt really know whether there was appearance money flying around or not. I can understand why gerrans might have better places to be than cronulla :) As for Brown, he has some extremely impressive legs!! I hope he gets more of a go in europe next season.

Brownie is very quick at the pointy end of a sprint. Been racing in Europe for a while now (with Panaria before Rabobank).

Quite happy to go in hard with the body too. :D I think he and the commissaires have had a few "discussions" over the years. In the Bay Crit series a few years ago he and Robbie McEwan had an absoulte ding dong battle....(if I recall correctly)

ed073 might be able to correct me on this.

last time I saw Brown on TV he was as fat as me :)

Can you please give me some advice? On a few of my rides down beach rd way (mainly south of frankston to sorrento) I come across 'group' rides. They mostly seem to stick to 33-36kmh and this is just a really frustrating pace for me. I normally will roll at 38-40kmh but am really a bit unsure of what to do...I feel really awkward passing them and sometimes I will sit about 10m off the back (hoping they will turn off somewhere) just to avoid riding past them. I usually wait for a set of red lights and I will ride through them to get away from the group.

I know this might be a stupid post, actually it definately is a stupid post. But i just dont know whats the right way to deal with pack rides that i have nothing to do with.

Basically, I won't let the presence of some group of bike shop boys disrupt my own pace :)

Yeah that was what was getting under my skin i guess. One day ill find a group thats just right for me :) I never know if people want to talk or not so I tend to ignore them but I would say hi if....arrgggg im thinking about this way too much :)

Oh yeah, so it does. I'd noticed it was a pic of bike in the snow, but hadn't checked it for the finer details. I think I'd rather just go skiing if there is gunna be snow involved.

You can't ski to the store for a 6 pack. Actually, you could have today. But they can't sell alcohol on Sundays here. Of course, the beer has no actual alcohol anyway.

I have a 'rule' that I always says g'day if I'm passing someone, but not if they're on the other side of the road. Although, on the days I'm doing 55 with a tailwind, and they're doing 30, there's not much point saying hello:)

I've been burnt by enough snobs to have a chip on my shoulder about ALL riders, but I haven't coz it's obviously unfair to judge 'em all. It's rare that I feel like talking, so I just say my little "g'day" and try not to get into a convo, but I'll always chat back if someone starts

atm im the opposite...if they come the other way then ill give a nod and raise a finger or two but if i go past them on my side of the road I just put the head down and get past. im yet to even have a conversation with another cyclist on the road lol pathetic!!

+1 what 531 says regarding bunches... if you are going faster then pass them, or, if you are going roughly the same speed sit off the back a little bit... unless you feel like joining in & then just ask if they mind or not. (also watch them first to see if they look they know how to ride safely in a bunch - some are just downright scary)
I prolly wouldn't roll thru red lights to get past a bunch though.

oh i only roll through early in the morning if its clearly safe (famous last words?). I would maybe join a group if i was happy with the pace but then i have this silly ipod hanging off me and enjoy the music and so I dont think they would appreciate my presence in that sense.

if you are asking to join in with a group do you have to ask the guys at the front? or just some guy at the back? is there a 'done thing' in that sense?

if you are asking to join in with a group do you have to ask the guys at the front? or just some guy at the back? is there a 'done thing' in that sense?i reckon it depends on the size of the bunch: the bigger the bunch the less they should mind one more dude stuck on the back. If it's just 2 guys I usually won't sit behind them, or at least I won't so so for very long. If it's 4 to 6 people and I wanna sit there, I might break the ice with "are you guys all together -- hope I'm not gate crashing", then I might say some crap like I'm exhausted, or I'm scared of the traffic and I feel safer in a bunch. I sometimes really like riding close to the gutter behind a 'two abreast' group, because I can have a break from looking over my shoulder for cars for while.

People go on and on about Beach Rd being grouse, but it's not the safest road out there; there's not even a bike lane. I just like it because there are heaps on Freds to mow down :), otherwise I'd go elsewhere. It's nowhere near as peaceful as it was 10, 15 or 20 years ago.

Guns are really foreign to me. I sometimes hate going into foo in particular when they have posts of shooting guns and stuff...freaks me out!!!

classic1
12-18-06, 05:11 AM
Same with me. I wouldn't even say I'm anti-hunting (I don't mind wild duck!) or anti-gun, I just wouldn't have one. I have some friends and relos who hunt or shoot, but none of them carry on and get a ***** for guns like some of these NRA characters. Home protection lol.

One thing I can appreciate the craftsmanship on a nice rifle (same as on a good bike frame). Some of these clowns going on about rapid fire rates and impact power of their Glock 9mm or whatever are just weird.

I appreciate the arguments made for the 'need' or even 'right' to hold guns and I also dont have anything against guns but 'gun loving' is about as rational to me as toilet bowl appreciation.

Any preferred 'fred mowing' technique....there is obviously the 50kmh vs 24kmh 'fastfred'...
:pAboslutely!! I could write a book on it. :p I've been grinding up and down Beach Rd for 20 years, and I know all the false flats, all the wind affected sections, the wind protected bits, etc, and I obviously know exactly where the small rises and traffic lights are.

Best done with a strong tailwind because 90% of riders don't seem to realise that drafting is very much reduced with a 60 knot tailwind.:) This means if you're creaming a bunch, they're not really helping each other that much by working turns -- it's almost each man for themselves. What usually then happens with a bunch on Beach Rd is that only 2 or 3 guys with any zip in them, so the rest will start spewing a dropping off after my first 1:06 flying km. :p. Then -- you guessed it -- after a few more kms, someone else will blow, so....you just go from there. If the last couple end up being any good, try to at least make them really hurt so they'll never forget you, then say at the end, "that was grouse fun", and they'll think you're a loon

Another good trick to p1ss them off is, if they get in front after a red light, or something, sit behind them for a bit as they're killing themselves, but sit up no hands, casually taking a sip from your bottle. This gets some strange reactions when they look over their shoulder :p

Rope a dope?As a matter of fact I do have a "rope a dope" trick: go past a dude at a reasonable pace, but not flat out, then sit it front on about 40kph, but pretend you're red-lining and totally dying, by thrashing your body all over the joint, and maybe pouring some water over your head. The dude then thinks you've toasted yourself, thinks you're easy meat, and tries to cream you. Then you hook onto the wheel, wait till he's cooked himself a bit, then BANG!! BOOM SHANKA!! Fly right by :p

I've gotta get a life :)

all this stuff is one of favourite training techniques, because the adrenalin-fueled 'competition' gets much more out of the legs, and is the next best thing to racing, i reckon :D. Maybe I could write Nev's Cyclist's Training Bible

it is the old school approach. tough love etc. the last 10 years in football at least there has been a real shift - where head coaches are allowing themselves to make personal connections to athletes. In years gone by it was a big no-no. i still prefer the old way because it has a certain sense of 'honesty' in the relationship. I like to call it the 'I am here for you dickhead but only if you work your ass off in accordance to my wishes or I will walk right out of here' coaching philosophy. Today you see a lot 'please put your body on the line for me because i really care about your development as a player and as a person in a holistic sense...now give me a hug' coaching philosophy. The latter can we very easily seen through and if its not done right you get major breakdowns in relationships where everything from the athletes point of view feels 'fake' and 'contrieved'.

Give me a grumpy old bastard anyday of the week. Id rather work my ass of for someone like that than these new age 'career' coaches

I think ive seriously seen it all on a coaching front
