I remember him doing a door-stop at a very tense time when Norths was about to merge with Manly. He came out of the meeting and said to the waiting journalists "Gentlemen, I have an announcement to make. I shot par today at Monash." Boom boom!:D

Till next Monday my life consists of riding, going to the beach and small projects around the house like alphabetising my CD collection.
I also plan to watch some of 'The 4400' season 2 that I got on DVD for Christmas.
The league version of the footy show is the best. Who'd have thought that Fatty, Sterlo, The Chief et. al. would have careers as comedians after retiring from football?

.did you haul your 111kg around the Dandenongs?
did you hall your 111kg around the Dandenongs?
no no no no....
This was circa 1995. A whole lifetime ago.
Wednesday Ride used to leave from Ringwood clocktower at 8 on...well....Wednesdays. Headed out to Healesville down Maroondah, turn right at the sanctuary towards Woori Yallock (more often than not see The Bulldog coming the other way) and end up on the old course from the 1991 nationals. Return via the wall and home along Canterbury Rd.
Serious day...170km plus, depending on route and some serious hit-outs.

Very well.
Great bloke. Naturally very talented.
There are some classic stories about training camps in Bright where he features heavily.

Impressive.
Ouch! Impressive indeed. I rememebr going up it a few years ago using my 39x21 coz it was the lowest I had, and having to stop coz my dodgy lower back was cramping from my efforts. :o I think I have improved since then though (*hopes*)

Tough berg at the end of a long day. Really saps the legs.

^^ nah, an A+ grade rider and one of the stronger dudes that used to do the group rides I sometimes do. Too many peanuts are now doing the group rides, so guys like him (semi-pros :p) tend not to do them as often.
I definitely can't shake him at all on Beach Rd, even with a strong tailwind, and on the Thursday 'hill' ride, he used to take off over the last 200m on each climb like he was just playing with me :p. How can I compete with a strong 68kg guy on a hill??? :p

after my tour of the 'Nongs for the first time in over a year, I nearly became a weight weeny for a day; figuring out how to lighten my bike. :p Can't believe it!! Me, the most anti-weight-weeny guy around!! Luckily for me, the Kreuzotter output calculator says that every drop of 1kg (roughly 1% of my total weight of body and bike) improves climbing time by approx 1%, so it's hardly worth it. I can afford the money to drop 1kg off my bike, but definitely not 2

Unless you're already at your absolute minimum weight, it's far cheaper and makes more sense to drop weight off the body rather than the bike. :D
Time for a name change, Nev? 531weightweenie? :roflmao:
Yeah....Nev makes Virenque look like Pieri.

Nice one, Ed!
Speaking of Virenque, just reading "Push Yourself Just a Little Bit More" by Johnny Green - he most definitely does NOT like the little Frenchman.

I've got the tape too. Amazing turn of speed.
The call by Tiger is incredible....
I think on the same tape I have Patey going for professional 1000m WR at Launceston....and the match sprint he did against Neiwand at Northcote in about 1989 where he went down at 70kmh in the back straight in a shower of sparks. Gotta love the leather hairnet.

From the "tears" of the Festina affair to his win at Paris-Tours.....one of the peloton's great entertainers.
Who cares if he was lit up like a Xmas tree? It's a Pro Tour prerequisite.

lol. The commentator is nearly crying on the commentary. 'A magnificent performance'. :) Theres a heap of crap like that at my dads, 'borrowed' off the TV. It's ripper stuff.
See the photo Clark is holding on cyclingnews. He's got his European Madison champion shirt on. Cool.
I was there that night Patey hit the deck. Cary Hall pulled a similar manouever on another occassion. Hall was one of if not the tactically smartest match sprint racer going around. He just didn't have the speed of the Pates and Neiwands. Patey should never have raced Neiwand in the 10 race match sprint series (or whatever it was) when he was world champ. He'd been on the piss for 4 months after his win and had more to loose IMO.

That's the one....big pin-on number flapping in the wind like a spinnaker....could've shaved another 2 seconds off without that. I love his apporach to the line....frontmarkers going at 10/10ths, chewing the stem and Clark comes past, arms up, like they're stuck in sand. Gold.
I missed Newiand v Pate at Northcote....but rode out there the next day and snagged a program that had blown up against the cyclone fence. :D
Met Carey on Beach Rd one day....he was out with Marcel Lema.

Not tall. Similar height to Pate, but a fair bit broader.

Hall won a Victorian road title before he found out he was diabetic and went into the sprint events.

First time I saw him inthe flesh was at the Superdome....he crouched to get something out of his toolbox/gym bag or something and this humungous hamstring nearly split his knicks. Out of control.
Billy-Joe told me he was fairly handy under the bench press, too.

Fairly handy punching on at the boozer by all accounts too. Apparently there was a Kelly v Hill clash of the titans. Would have been a battle and a half IMO.
The old man (tactical guru and master joke organiser) gave him the brief on how to win the ride off for 5th at the 93 worlds. He didn't know the old man well and blanked him. Sutton was standing there and just said 'listen to him and do it'. :D

Those Alan track bikes were things of beauty. Probably not very good bikes, but looked great!

Geez, you blokes are bringing back memories of knocking back VB cans on assorted freezing nights at Northcote while watching Patey, Kelly etc go ballistic on the concrete.....ahh...good times! :D
My best performance at that venue was the hat trick of goals I scored playing hockey in the middle of the track! :)

Two funny Northcote stories.
1 - Sid Patterson pissed as a newt abusing Neiwand over the fence calling him weak as piss and show pony. Neiwand was standing at the bottom track abusing the great man back. Sids bellowing was too much though.
2 - Ross Forster abusing a WA pairing at an Aussie Madison title who'd lost about 6 laps in 20km. They started slinging one another back and forth up the straight playing to the crowd. Roscoe yells out 'get off the track you dickheads' or something and the crowd of 6000 fell about laughing.

Hey ed, did you used to go drinking at "The Circuit" sportsbar or whatever it was called (I think the pub was actually the Loaded Dog) in St Georges Road back in early/mid 90's? Used to be a fair amount of riders drink there & they had various bikes & skinsuits adorning the walls...
Hmm...a quick Google search shows the venue has a slightly "different";) focus these days - although lycra and shaved limbs are probably still popular :D

What about that slightly wobbly panel coming into the straight. Thump, thump. I farking hated racing at Northcote. Never liked that track. Then again, I only went well there a couple of times so that probably explains it:p
Another one I saw there was when 14 blokes fell in a C grade scratch race one night on the very last bend - right in front of us. One bloke lost half his finger and another was choking on this tongue. Gruesome.

That would have been nasty for sure. Always wondered about the thinking (or lack of) behind putting a sand based ground inside a bike track. in truth it was a pretty ****house hockey ground too.
