Australia - New Zealand - The Aussie thread. . . part cinq.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. aaah, interesting. I wonder how he keeps in touch with Ride and the big smoke all the way down there. :)
Normally smoke signals, but they would have been useless the last few weeks. Probably using courier pigeons or pony express.:p

Didn't get to Metung.
I kinda wish I'd gone further east past the main strip, coz someone said it's a little nicer

Mrs. Expat got bashed up tongiht at work. She took off after a guy that stole some DVDs, and he turned around and took a swing at her. She's ok, broken finger and some bruising. But she got in a few good shots herself.
Sounds like you shouldn't get on the wrong side of Mrs E, then. Hope she's ok ..... that sort of thing is a real shock to the system.

Paging ecnetsixe......
Paging ecnetsixe again.
Dunno what ecnetsixe is doing deleting those old posts. I'm pissed off because any time I've answered one of his posts without using 'reply w/ quote' it will look like I'm mental or have an imaginary friend.
I'll be keeping my eye out for a new member called sexcntiee or something over the next week or so.

Maybe he's been banned again - which is all well and good but why the F**k do all posts then get deleted? In fact, I don't know if you noticed but when "existence" got the boot, the "Bobby Flynn" thread suddenly vanished as well all the posts he had made on TAT (and presumably elsewhere) up to that point. And I very much doubt that young Daniel was responsible for their removal.
It is really irritating - by all means delete the offending post when someone transgresses the forum guidelines, but why do all posts then disappear? Talk about using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

He's not banned from what I can see and looks to have changed his user account so you can't PM or email him. IIRC he asked the mods to delete his posts last time. Mind you, if I was him I would have deleted that Bobby Flynn stuff too :D
Well if that's the case - he is one very odd young man. I worry about him occasionally.
And whatever triggered it happened sometime yesterday (Sat'dee) 'coz I read a reply to my post about the Fish around 7:30am and by the afternoon, it had disappeared. Curiouser and curiouser said Alice.

Wait a minute! Aren't you living in Utah, safest state in the Union? The poor fool obviously didn't know he was messin' with an Ozzie.

Gday All.
Got no idea wot this thread is all about - and wasn't going to go back over the previous 79 pages to find out....
But anyway, greetings from Perth (well South Perth anyway), Western Australia.
Aaaah, Perth. The Cyclists' Dream. Capital of the Known Universe; Land of Perpetual Sunshine, Bounteous Cycle Paths and Flat Topography.
I will avoid mentioning the howling sea breeze, ignorant pedestrians (WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE PHRASE "DUAL USE PATHWAY" THOSE SELFISH MORONS DON'T UNDERSTAND???), lobotomised dog lovers, irresponsible parents and slack jawed, off with the pixies drivers that combine to do their best to negate all the aforementioned virtues.
I'd be obliged if the Giant CRX (read FCR if you're a USn) owners among you wouldn't mind jumping across to the road bikes thread where I pose the question:
Does/did your Giant CRX1 (06) jump out of top gear? And what did you do about it?
Cheers
stales
Bloody hell and Crikey!!!
Where was she working expat?. A servo, video shop or an all night convenience store or something? Thats the problem with those places, easy targets (except when missus Expats working).
She works in a store that's like Target, or a mini version of Big W. She's a loss prevention investigator, and she watched this guy walk in, go right to the DVDs and make a selection. He took it to another part of the store and crouched down and removed the EAS tag that the manufacturer puts inside the package. He's obviously done this before. He then stuck it down the front of his pants and tried to walk out. Since he went around the registers, she got to him before he was out the door. And he just went nuts, yelling and screaming at her, calling her names. When she took out her cuffs, he tried to bolt, and she went after him. She took a hit to the head, but didn't give up until he threatended to kill her.
She got the DVDs back, and he's in jail facing prison time for robbery by use of threat or force, rather than retail theft. He would have been hit with a $180 fine, but because he bashed my wife, he's in big trouble. She's ok, but I don't think she wants to do this kind of work anymore.
I'll check to see what's up wtih Danny boy.
East Hill - before I moved to Australia, I lived in Westlake Village, which is technically Thousand Oaks, CA. Go figure.

You were safer in Westlake Village! Go figure, indeed. And I always thought that the LDS folks kept things safe in Utah. That's what Mr. East Hill's sister says (she lives in American Fork). Just watch out for gun totin' fools in big pickups with ATVs in the back in Utah.
But it's a shame Mrs. Expat got hurt, and I hope she's recovering.

I don't blame her .... still, you don't expect that sort of stuff in Utah. I guess the perception being that such an obviously religious state should be somehow more law abiding and therefore safer.
Oddly enough, a few years ago Utah lead the country in **** statistics, so clearly all is not as it appears on the surface.
The missus is doing better today, thank you. Unfortuantely, we cannot afford to live in WLV. To buy back my 2 bedroom condo would have cost $420k. A bit steep for me. :D I work in American Fork, and I'm reasonably sure that the biggest threat is the drivers here. Add to that 5 months of snowy season, and you can see why everyone drives a giant SUV - protection from the rest of the idiots.
Matagi - we have a population of under 100 thousand, and I think 80% or thereabout are uni students. I looked into the **** statistics before we moved here, as that was a big concern. It appears the truth in this case is a double-edged sword. The schools (UVSC and BYU) have done a better job of convincing women that were victims of sexual assault to come forward and report them. It's not necessarily a matter or more rapes, they just don't go unreported as often as they might in other states.
Ah yes, "how to lie with statistics" :D Someone actually wrote a book with that name.
I must say, if I had to live in the US and could choose my location, I would go for Utah.
Good to hear MrsExpat is feeling better today.
I'd choose California, just off Main Street in Ventura. Australia spoiled me with all the little shops and cafe's within walking distance, or a short ride away. We have none of that in Utah, and less on Sunday.
Hmm, dunno about Heber .... have only driven through there at high speed on the way to somewhere else. Is SLC still a wasteland when it comes to cafes, etc? It was a real desert during the 2002 Winter Olympics, I'm sure most of the Europeans were wondering what they'd gotten themselves into. At least Park City was a bit more cosmopolitan although Dave Chapelle was there doing stuff for Jay Leno and kept commenting on the fact that he was the only black man on Main St!
I don't think I've been to SLC 6 times, and I've been here almost a year. Sundance has a cafe. Hardly worth the drive in the snow though.

You haven't missed much by not going to SLC ... only times we've been aside from during the Winter Olympics was when we had to go to the Home Depot in South Salt Lake and a couple of trips to Fashion Place Mall over in Murray.
You're in Provo, aren't you?
I must say, if I had to live in the US and could choose my location...
Bay Area or Napa Valley for me.
Portland would also be high up on the list.

Burlington in Vermont was nice, as was Portsmouth in New Hampshire (I think Ronnie James Dio comes from there as well).
Actually, the other place I would consider is the New England area or... and this one's a bit left field ... the French Quarter in New Orleans.
Crosspost from TAN
Just to show Ma that i've been doing some thinking about the next TAN ride...
We have two major issues - when and where  :D
I've been thinking that Australia day would be good, but a lot of people will have their famaily stuff on, making it a bit tough.
I need responses about this people! If you all want Oz day, then that's cool by me :)
The where, well bbp did tell us that he knew a loop that was magic in Sydney, i'm happy to give that one a blast - end up near his place. I know a killer Czech restaurant that we could hit up. Doma's (http://www.unasdoma.com.au/)
OR, bbp might be nice enough to pull out the old bbq in his backyard.
OR, we could do the Sydney races and do my favourite pub crawl on bikes. Start at the Macquarie near Central, the new joint under world square with 50 odd beers on tap, over to the Australian in the rocks, finishing at the Lord Nelson.
Alternatively, the smart idea would be to have it on the coast, meaning all of you guys don't have to travel so far. I'd be thinking that meeting at the same place as last time, go for a ride to someone's joint for a feed and a few quiet beers would be a nice way to spend an arvo. Someone would have to put their hand up for it though...
Oh, and everyone, lurkers included, is welcome. Might as well get everyone in on it. :)
Let me know everyone!

I had a great workout yesterday. Ive been trying to work on my core strength in a cycling specific way. Jumped on one of the spin bikes (had the room to myself) and danced on the pedals for 1.5 hours straight with no seated rest. It was perfect. It replicated exactly how I feel when I climb from my lower back perspective.
I wouldnt say I am seconds away but I am stronger :D

Nah, it was too long to wait after finishing. I think the pro's didn't start until later afternoon or early evening so a suitable leave pass would have ben tuff to secure.
And besides...it was much more inviting to hop into the air-con comfort of the car than to sit around in a fan forced oven environment straight after riding 120kms in the heat (with the last 60kms into a 40-60kmh cross and head wind)

hey easternites, riding up Ferntree Gully Rd to the hills is a bit hairy; I end up spending some time on service lanes and footpaths! I was thinking of trying Wellington Rd, then cutting across via Napolean Rd, Taylors Lane, Kellets or even Lysterfield.
Any good?

The whole area is farked basically. If there is a hill billy red neck clueless driver central in melbourne this is it.
I will look into it a bit for you. I know ive used wellington a few times and seriously its a death trap with the amount of trucks using it as a back door into and out of Melbourne. I use it sparingly to head up past odin's town and into the good stuff.
Anyway im back on the road now. I might go do some recon for you :)

Odin should be the expert tour guide for us but yes - although depends on what you classify 'the good stuff'. If we are talking hills then yes 'one tree hill rd' and around there is good but if we are talking hydroponic type 'good stuff' then....thats another story alltogether  :p

Have you guys noticed that "Bing" Lee has become "Bingo", and Haydos is now "Dos" or "Dossy"?
