In this day and age with the conveniences of instant messaging, private messages and email, the confusion and misinterpretation of it makes me even more grateful for the telephone and face to face interaction with others. People just cannot READ you. They have to FEEL you when in conversation.

I've known of people whose relationships have had to survive bumps in the road because of the inablility to understand what someone meant when they had typed something. Even posting here on BF can sometimes be taken wrong. It is funny sometimes how it ends up being nothing at all in the first place! I am sooooooooooo glad that those I am close to call me or talk to me in person. :)

Yup. Picking up the phone resolves most misinterpretation of tone in e-mail correspondence. This happened at work yesterday.

Specially, those on Blackberry's. They don't have a means to type a whole heck of a lot, so if the message is short, it's not neccessarily terse.

I'm not into computers as most people so I don't really use my private email as much. I agree though I much rather talk to someone face to face or on the phone. I love technology because its made our lives easier in some respect but at the same time I hate it cause its so INPERSONAL.

People are never more misunderstood as when they are trying to communicate online. It's almost impossible to detect sarcasm, the use of emoticons help somewhat. Any sort of body language is absent which is a major contributor to communication. I try to communicate the best I can on here, but I'm sure I get misunderstood a LOT. Especially when I'm joking around. That's what this is for: :p

:D

I've always hated talking on the phone too...I guess I just like interaction in person. :)

I KNOW I'm misunderstood. When I'm serious, people don't take me serious. When I'm fooling around, people get all serious.

FYI for those on Foo: I am absolutely serious about absolutely everything I say, always.

I think the interpretation of what is said online depends on the readers mood, if you feel insecure you're bond to feel you were being attacked and if you feel careless, you are bond to find an easy flowing convo. you can take what is said both ways on many things depending on your mood. It's just a reflexion of what "you" felt at the times. A simple conversation or teasing can become a battle if you allready had a chip on your shoulder about that person, then you tend to take everything the wrong way and ad whatever sentiment you felt.. for example " I havent heard from you for a long time!!!!!!" could be taken as that person missed you or could be taken as that person is putting guilt on you for not having given them news in a long time... OK, Ill stop, just call me Dr. Phil

Ah, I suck at social interaction offline too, I just have problems reading people so to say...so to me t really doesn't matter.

I do however think certain subjects DESERVE to be done either in voice, or in person....anything else is just disrespectful.

That kind of stuff happens to me all the time. I keep forgeting the person on the other side can't tell if i'm joking ornot. And since I usually am, it sometimes gets misinterpreted. Then trying to explain yourself after that happens, usually makes things worse(at least for me). I'm definately the type of person that should only converse on a phone...

tough for me because i normally have a very sarcastic sense of humor. sarcastism is pretty tough to pull off in an email.

In written communication, sarcasm is oft complimented by hyperbole.

I don't know. My wife and I have been each others best friends for the past 10+ years and we still have trouble knowing when each other is serious or joking. And it goes downhill from there with people I don't know as well. When writing I take time to think out what I want to say and how I want to say it and I think I come across much better than in person.

Agreed. It's a bit more challenging. Still not an obstacle if you're dealing with literate people though.

I really avoid doing serious communication via e-mail or instant messaging. Relational discussions (back home in Texas we call them DTR's--define this relationship), conflict resolution, catching up, etc. should always be done when eye contact is available, if that is not possible, something involving the ability to pick up on voice inflection is desired. Skype is great for that if a regular phone call is too expensive. I save IM/E-mail for basic requests and simple work related messages. And always remember, if it's a guy you're talking to, regardless of what his eyes say or his voice is saying, he probably means nothing more or less than the words that he's saying.

I tend to misinterpret others even more than I feel misinterpreted myself - as Siu can testify. :o Sometimes, you have to IM, but give me the phone anytime...IM drives me crazy when something important and/or subtle comes up.

LOL....That was not meant for you. Although, I may be forced to provide you with an old fashion N.C. butt thrashing if you don't lower your tone.....See how easy things can get missunderstood.

haha, that thread was great.

I think we need to start a gay bike parts club in dedication to that thread. I have a few Suntour Ovaltech chainrings I can start off the club with (Shimano Biopace ripoff)...i have the 50-something, and middle ring....they had oddball tooth capacities.
