does anyone know the park tool part number for the cassette lockring tool that works on 7 speed shimano deore dx?

I believe that either the FR-5 (without guide pin) or FR-5G (with guide pin) should fit all Shimano cassettes (not freewheel).

That's the correct Park part number. The Shimano tool is TL-HG16. Either will work on any "speed" Shimano cassette.

thanks, i managed to locate an fr-5g at my lbs, and it worked like a charm.

another question: i have a fixed and adjustable cup, an axle, and some bearings contained in races for my bottom bracket configuration. my instruction manual says to install the fixed cup, and then tighten the adjustable cup until it binds on the bearings, then back it off about an 1/8 of a turn. then it says to check that the axle has no up and down play--otherwise tighten the adjustable cup until the play disappears.

however, to tighten the adjustable cup enough so that there is no up and down play in the axle, i find the adjustable cup binds on the bearings. after i disassembled and degreased everything, the bearings looked brand new and there was no pitting on the axle bearing surface, so the parts looked fine to me. is the play in the axle caused by worn bearings?

No worn bearings won't cause play. The only possible defect is a bent spindle. However, even with perfect components, the difference between binding and play is a VERY small turn of the adjustable cup, way less than 1/8 turn, more like 1 or 2 degrees. It is a bit of an art to hit the right spot and get the lock ring secure without changing the setting.
