Well, the crank/BB of my mid 1970's Gran Sport was creaking (more like krunk krunk) so a friend helped me rebuild it. We replaced a fixed wheel with ebedded berrings with free berrings. The spindle on the left side had definite wear. When we were done there was no play, no grinding, and no noise. Now, after 40 miles it is creaking up a storm. Do I need to replace the spindle or entire BB? At the moment, I'm sinking cause I don't have the tools and can't quite remember the steps.
The reason I posted here is I'm not sure the BB is standard issue nowadays. I believe I saw it stamped something like "Nevar 105".

This is extra frustrating because the rear spokes were very loose and one broke - making the wheel untrue. I put it in to be restrung with new spokes. After a 2 week wait the shop called to say the freewheel and the hub (beautiful Nevar) were stripped - ergo new wheel, new freewheel (btw - 7spd don't fit). This is getting a little rich for me.

The usual culprit for that creaking noise is a loose crank arm bolt. Try removing the bolts, putting a dab of grease on the threads, and re-tightening as hard as you can. I've had some crank bolts that will just keep on getting loose, no matter what I do, so I had to continually retighten or replace the setup. If your bb spindle is already showing signs of wear, you might consider replacing it. Finding an equivalent shouldn't be too hard--finding the same length is key.

You betcha! A quarter turn with my socket wrench almost made the bolts finger loose! I put some grease on them and used a 6" pipe over the wrench to put more torque oh them. I'm riding to the LBS to have the temp 7spd freewheel replaced with a 5spd to revert to original spec. (7spd a bit too wide). Maybe I'll be able to hear the chain rattle enough to use the friction shifters now.
