Bicycle Mechanics - Did I ruin my GP 4000 tire? Is it safe to ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was trying to get a tiny piece of metal out of the tire that caused a flat and it was to small to grip with pliers and to sharp to get my fingers near it (already sliced my pinky) so i tried to flick it out like you would a splinter, using a razor knife and when I got the piece out I was left with some threads(like one single frayed thread and one next to it showing) showing on the interior of the tire, centered in the tire. Is this safe to ride? Or do i have to spend yet even more money on this sport?

for the price of one tire I could get some new running shoes and be set for a lot longer...

That brings up a good question:

When does a hole in a tire require that the tire be retired? What's the criteria?

When the cords are cut or when it's big enough to allow the tube through even with a boot.

From your description, the tire should be fine. However, this does not exclude you from spending money on cycling gear.

Try one of those mylar patches that Park sells for repairing tiny holes in tires. Pump it up to 10-20 psi more than you normally use and let it sit for a couple of days. Have a good look at the tire, if it still seems OK then put it on the rear of your commuter.

Just what I would do.

If the hole is smaller than the diameter of a cocktail straw the tire is fine.
Larger and you will want to use a boot (mylar energy bar wrapper and a bit of glue)
If you want to be conservative move the tire to the back of the bike.
