General Cycling Discussion - flying w/ your bike, vs. shipping it ahead
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My wife & a friend & I are planning a cycling vacation to Tuscon this coming winter, and unlike previous trips we want to bring our own bikes (rather than rent there). We're trying to weigh the pros & cons of packing the bikes as checked luggage on our flight, versus packing them in advance & shipping them via a freight carrier (UPS or FedEx, I suppose?) to our Tuscon destination.
One obvious advantage of the latter is that we don't have to worry about getting 3 crated bikes to & from the airports.
Anyone have any first hand experience with either method (or perhaps an alternative method) that would sway us one way or the other? Thanks.

I had the same dillemma during my recent trip to Florida. I ended up watching craigslist.org during the weeks before my trip and found an older and cheaper Schwinn road bike that I was able to purchase for a fraction of the cost of shipping the bike or taking it with me on the flight.
I did have the advantage of meeting other family down there that drove, so they were able to take my new bike back with them. Still, if sending the bike home with family isn't an option, I probably would have tried to pawn it off or ship it home myself.
In my experience, I ended up with a great backup bike for less than I would have spent otherwise. YMMV

I was in Chicago a few months ago and put an ad on CL to rent a bike. Got an offer to use a real nice one, forget how much I offer, think it was around $50 , but it was over 5 or 6 days. Ended up not doing it since it rained most of the time i was there.

I dont have experience with either... but, I do know the airlines charge a pretty hefty fee like $50 per crate. Plus you have to buy or rent the crates, and lug them around. If you have an option to mail them to somewhere, such as the hotel you are staying at, I would do that. However, most large cities rent bikes. Why not just rent when you get there? Unless you are like me and HAVE to have your own bike. :D I understand completely.
