General Cycling Discussion - Vegas question

I may be moving to Las Vegas in June for a year because of my dads business. I was just wondering if I'll have anything interesting to do on my bike in the middle of the desert. This question is primarily for my road bike? Are there any good places to ride that I should know about?

You might want to do a search in the archives. I believe there have been 3-4 recent discussions about biking in the Vegas area. I beleive we have a couple of "Vegascyclist"s here also, and I am sure they will provide you with gret info.

I rode a little in Vegas last year and thoroughly enjoyed - especially the are around Red Rock Canyon, etc.

What a chagne from Toronto.. The forests to the desert.. I was so taken by the OATBRAN across northern Nevada, I have already emailed the sponsors and said, I want to do it again..
Vegas in Summer too hot, go west and the coast of California is some of the best riding in North America. Winter or summer..
Check out OATBRAN on Bike the West web site.. Not only OATBRAN but other rides like the Bizarre Area 51, ride from Vegas to Red Rock Valley? and back, and others.. Very well organized...mabye see you at the OATBRAN?

you are going to love it... take up rock climbing as cross training.. ample riding and climbing there and in the area.. you have some good advice from the others..
my friend moved out to san diego from windsor ontario.. big difference.. now she has a book coming out about climbing.. she rides, climbs, mountaineers... grrrrrrrrrrr..

the NOrth rim of the Grand Canyon is only 187 miles south. Angle Fire New mexico, Utah and colorado are all very close. Your gettin dumped in a VERY good spot.

I was shocked by the number of roadies I saw while I was out there. It seemed like bicycles were EVERYWHERE. Don't miss Red Rock Canyon for a nice ride. 13 mi scenic loop, 5 miles uphill, the rest downhill. It's pretty nice. There are lots of other rides out there. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Have you sent a PM to VegasCyclist or some of the other members who live near that area?

Once you adjust to the heat and wind you'll be just fine. Vegas drivers are some of the worst in the world so be careful in town.

Two words, "Bootleg Canyon".
Just out side of Vegas there are some of the best riding. Every thing form long xc epics to very technical dh/fr trails. As for road riding there are numerous roads that you can just take off on and go for miles with no traffic.

Also, as mentioned before you will have the N rim of the Grand Cyn. and a lot of small patches of trails you can explore.

If you check out the new issue of MBA they actually did a write up about Bootleg Cyn. We head out there at least 4 to 5 times a year. Now this artical has let our little secret out.

Another thing to consider, you will only be a 4 hour drive to SoCAL and you can check out some of the sweet trails here and up in Big Bear.

Oh yeah, one other thing. You will have to learn to ride in temps of 112 to 120f especialy in July and August.
If you do get a chance to check out SoCAL let me know and I could point you in the right direction for some sweet riding.

You are close to SoCal and it is the best place to ride all year around :) I know I actualy got a bit sunburned last friday, we hit the 90's.
Vegas should be a nice change of pace for you though, considering you are coming from toronto.

90F shouldn't be too bad though. In Toronto we have 90F+ with the SMOG alerts. Is it like that in Vegas?

there are many places to ride here, road and mtb.... plus you can ride all year! it's really a nice place to cycle. However, there is one downside... most of the people here are into mtbing, and cycling in general is not as big as other cities.

Anyhow if you do end up moving here, just drop me a line I'll show ya around :D
