I found This add (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/182074355.html) on Craigslist today, and emailed the guy out of curiosity. Here's the response I got:

HUGE BIKE SALE WILL BE SATURDAY JULY 15th
Come out ANYTIME 8-5 on SATURDAY.
OVER 200 used Hybrids, Road, BMX, Mountain, Classic, Cruisers, 1 & 3
speeds, & a lot of other bike parts, racks, etc...... LOTS OF BIKES AT $40!
901 Jackson Street
Benicia CA 94510
You'll see a sign for it on the right hand side that says JACKSON STREET
SELF STORAGE. Park and walk up the ramp
My storage is open 8-5. Cash only.

The bikes are all used and I do not steal them! All of the bikes have
been purchased! I am a P.E. teacher and I give away bikes as an incentive
at school to help keep kids in school! This helps pay for them! Any
questions please call!
THANKS! SKIP 707 ***-****

What do you guys think? His reasons for the bikes being "not stolen" don't add up to me. Should I send an email to the Benicia Police Department? Or just call the guy and see how legit he sounds before heading out for a look?

I don't want to get an honest person in trouble, but at the same time, I don't want to support bike theivery.

Huh. That's been posted in the Sacramento Craigslist too. I don't know what to think either.

That add was up last week, and I emailed him. I never showed up, as they seem to be stolen bikes =/ He must be setting up another sell day.

Seems he emailed me the same thing as you.

Yeah, I'm thinking there's no way this is real, especially with multiple sell attempts. I'm going to send an email to the Benecia PD.

My take: never buy anything from a self-store. That's about as bad as walking up to a 15 year old in the crummy districts of chicago and buying a handful of gold chains for $100.

Alright, I sent an email to the Benicia PD, and this was their response:

I know Detective Menesini replied to your e-mail but I have even more
updated information since he communicated with you.

The guy who is selling these bikes is a local Benicia resident and has
been selling bikes for some time now. He normally buys these bikes at
local auction houses and then turns around and re-sells them. This is
not to say that he could not be selling stolen bikes, just unlikely.
We have alerted the patrol staff which will be on duty during this event
and they will be conducting a check during the sale. Thanks for the
information. If there is and arrest or recovery made I will keep you
informed.

You're right catatonic, I'm a bit of a tattletale. Just want to set my conscience straight, ya know?

(I'll be going there tomorrow too, btw!)

dangit...he's legit, and it costs too much for a plane ticket....that would have been a great way to get a beater bike for going to concerts and stuff.

hopefully the bikes won't turn your neck green, though.

Did you two go to the bike sale?

Me and siu blue wind went, I got a 4300 mainly just for the frame. The ****** sales person would not negotiate on anything. Its either an 04 or 05 bike. The frame is in great condition but it looks like the guy put tons of garbage parts on the bike. I'm going to repaint it and fix it all up.

For some reason I thought I'd broughten my camera, but now I can't find it. I'm afraid its lost.

Real address, real phone, real storage location, continuing presence. Sounds not too dicey. Anyone going to the next one check for national Bicycle Registry stickers and call them in, OK?

It's a very sad state of affairs when citizens feel the need to inform on one another with absolutely nothing to suggest illegal activites except something that to them seems out of the norm. Every time I go back to the States I recognize it less and less as the free country I grew up in. How sad.
