Road Bike Racing - inflicting pain

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After the two weekends of Cypress mountain climbs I was not doing my best with mid pack finishes in the weekly crit. Well this week no weekend hill climb so I guess I was fairly recovered for my Race 5 at the local crit and I'm back with a 5th place finish. 2 points Yay. I think my sprinting is coming up. I was in a good position at 5th going into the sprint. I stood up and shifted just as the others were making their move. I over shifted and was into my smallest cog, a 13, but the pace was already fast so I just got in the drops kept standing the whole way and worked my ass off. The hole shot sure was poor being in my 13 though. Half way into the sprint a guy young enough to be my son overtakes me putting me in 6th but I was still accelerating and I was coming up on another guy but I did not think I could get past him before the line. He lost his wind I guess and I shot my bike forward just at the line eking out my 5th place and bumping him back into 6th . Sucker. He was almost young enough to be my grandson I think. God it feels good to beat the kids. His mom looked pissed. Ha.
I was not very aggressive in sports back in school. I never had that killer instinct. Probably because I have too much empathy for the looser. So I'm trying to break that problem. Is feeling good about inflicting pain on your competitors the necessary ingredient? If so I will mend my ways and start inflicting pain now as I see that I can do it. Ha.

A TV bio on Lance last year said that as a teenager he was more interested in making the other triatheletes suffer than he was interested in winning.

gotta be smart about it though. usually if you go up to the front and push the pace, everyone latches onto your wheel and it's you thats making yourself suffer. if the course has no opportunities for a break you'll get guys that sit in and get a free ride....then they're fresh for the finish while you're all burned out.

Somewhat of a sick ethos dont you think?? What is wrong with one proving his or her superiority in an athletic endeavor and letting it go at that?

Not the sick ethos crap. Please. Society with its mamby pamby ethos is not going to hold me down this time.
"Nothing like the ability to inflict pain! I can still visualize faces
on people I wrestled where you could see the pain and struggle as they
squirmed to get out of some holds.
Enjoy!"
This quote is from one of my best friends who replied to an email similer to my original post. Not sick. This friend who is also a very successfull person in life and career was a wressler in high school and college. He became the provincial champ. My Uncle: Not Sick, held the Golden Gloves in Quebec. Me: Truely sick, is as uncompetitive as it gets. Thats gota change.
