Senator urging bike registration had run-in with bicyclists
By DEENA WINTER, Bismarck Tribune
A Fargo senator who has introduced a controversial bill to levy a $50 registration fee on serious bicyclists was accused of intentionally striking a bicyclist on a road north of Fargo in 1997.
Sen. John Syverson, R-Fargo, is the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 2391, which would require long-distance bicyclists who ride outside city limits to register with the state, although it wouldn't apply to bikes with less than three gears or bicyclists who are under the age of 14.
The state would issue a registration decal that would be good for two years, and the money collected would be deposited in the state highway fund for the construction and maintenance of bicycle paths.

oout here in Canada we are the most tax people on earth, we are even tax for the air we breath, in Onatrio, we have the P.S.T. AND THE G.S.T. , on all item we buy wether in store its everywere
In the Missouri Senate this week Senator Bray from St. Louis introduced SB 400 which would make it illegal to drive or park in a bicycle lane. It would also assess minimum liability to a motorist who negligently stuck a cyclist. Unfortunately, it has no chance of passage for a variety of reasons, mainly political but also that Missouri is not a particularly bicycle friendly state. I would have no problem being assessed a tax on my bicycle for causing damage to the roadways if it was in line with the taxes cars and trucks pay for the same. I figure I would have to round up to a penny.

The Ironic thing about this is that the $50 fee probably will not cover the cost of instituting this program and keep it running
I think its a total load. Including the senators competence.

It is also illegal in Ontario (maybe even Canada) to ride on multilane highways. No tax but definatley no riding. I was fined a number of times on a fairly small highway when I lived in Ontario.

Gee the guy is even a Republican. He should spend time researching how the trucking industry has lobbied to have the safe highway axil weights disregarded for much heavier trucks which do more damage than all the bike riders in the US combined.
A guy in rural texas tried to have more than 3 riders have to ware a triangular sign used by tractors on rural roads to indicate slow moving vehicles and ban large group rides. Needless to say he was shot down in a hail of written abuse.
And we really pay these guys. Amazing!:fun:
