View Full Version : Loosen sealed hub wheels?

Just bough some Mavic Aksiums (tight budget) to replace my Bontrager Selects. I'd like to loosen them a bit so there's not so much pressure on the hub and allow them to spin a bit freer. When I looked at the rear wheel, I think I figured out what to do. Did I do this right...?

Placing the cassette on my left, I loosened the right hex nut (green circle). I was then able to move an aluminum spacer to the right some some and then screw the slotted piece to the right. The hub still seems to be tight, but the wheel spins MUCH freer. Have I done anything wrong? I moved the three pieces maybe 1/3mm to the right.

Still, when I place the wheels on the bike and give the cranks a quarter turn, I only get 4-5 full revolutions before the wheel comes to a stop. On my older Trek 2000 (the current bike = 1500), a quarter turn of the cranks will make the wheel spin 20+ revolutions before stopping. Is it possible that the hub is new and after a few hundred miles it will loosen up and the ratchet will result in less friction?

Seems correct. But to make sure your adjustment dosent move, hold the bolt to the left with one wrench, and the bolt to the right with another, then tighten.
