Bicycle Mechanics - Problem with rear break

On my rear break one side is fine, but the other is to close to the wheel and rubs while riding. I have tried to adjust the cable it is clamped to, but then it hardly breaks when it is out a little farther. Help please!!!!

what kind of brake is it? Usually there's some type of centering mechanism (i.e., some screw that you turn somewhere) but it's different for the different types of brakes.

Also, are you use the brake is not centered? The wheel may not be "dished" properly.

You where correct all I had to do was twist a screw and it worked like a charm. Thanks dhan.

I've had this problem as well. Its hard for me to get tension. Is it a matter of getting the screws tightened on one side and less on the other? I have a mountian bike with V breaks.

I also need to get a new chain for the first time, are there certain brands to stick with or is a chain a chain? I bet everyone in the forums can tell I'm way noobish about the question I ask.

What brand is your brake? If it's one of the cheaper brands I'd recommend replacing it with a lower end Shimano brake.

Take your bike to a bike shop and have them fix it this time. They can fix this pretty quickly and hopefully you can watch so you can do it yourself next time. I'd also recommend getting a few bike tools and a bike repair book.

It seems that you are not pulling all the slack from the cable before you tighten the anchor bolt. Check the Park tool website http://www.parktool.com/repair/

I do have a book and tools. I've watched movies on how to change it. I tried pulling as hard as I could and the slack from the cable would not give ne more.
