Foo - triathalon help...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know there is a section for this, but since i came to BF, most of my posts have been here, and I feel a little more comfortable posting here. I've decided to start training for a local triathalon. It's a short one, but for me, a big step. I have exactly one year to get ready. I run about 2 miles, 3 times a week, and right now, just MTB the local trails. I'm really looking for some advice about training for the transitions, and swimming, as well as nutrition. I've poked around the tri section and found soe good stuff, I guess I was just looking for anyone who has some insight on this type of event. thanks in advance....chris

I have a few questions for you first. There are a few multi sport people here including BDG. PM me and I'll give you some help. I'm sure a few others here can offer some good tip and insight as well. I have a duathlon in October I'm doing.

what kind of milage is your first tri? the transition you only get used to by repetivly doing it, try running your 2 miles right after you get off your bike and keep doing this for a while.. but how far are your distances?

road bike right? thought you wrote you are Montain biking.. increase your running milage by a quarter to half a mile every week till you get to your 3 miles but in the mean time just ride your bike for those 15 miles and try running two miles right after.. it will hurt but youll be surprised how fast youll get your legs back.( the more you practice) oh and get in the pool!!! :)

ya, I am into mtb, but i'm working on the road bike build right now. One of the guys on my crew used to swim competitively in college, so he's offered his services as a coach. running is my big challenge, but I think in a year, I should be able to knock out 4-5 no problem...oh, and thanks for the advice guys, it's greatly appreciated....

the swim is the different part in a pool you usaly dont have people trying to swim over you, i have heard of people training several to a lane and swimming close to each other to get the same efect.
not trying to scare you but that is haw the swim is if you are fast get out in front soon if not hang back a little .
biking and running are easy to train for if you have never had people trying to swim past you and over you it might be kind of scary if you are not a strong water person,
if you can swim close to other people that will take out shock the day of the race,
good luck and enjoy they are fun
aslo sign up early that way it gives you traing incentive

the triathlon forums are very helpful, i know what you mean though.. it is easier to ask people your comfy with but reading in the tri forums will help you too, they do have a lot of advice in there.
I agree about the swim part of it, it is the part most people struggle with and yep, you're right a year from now is definitly more then enough time to get ready for this.
each race is different, I try and find people that I can hang with from previous races. this does two things, it allows us to crowd others and move them out of the way and also to avoid the annoying elbow to calf hit.
Good luck
