rolling pretty well at my TT this morning. halfway through, a right hand 90 degree turn is coming up. slightly downhill into it. just before i start my turn, i notice that the road i'm turning onto seems to be a very narrow two lane road, narrower than what i've been on. so i start slowing. last speed i saw was 27 mph. there was a guy at the corner to make sure that no one missed the turn, and he said that halfway through it my rear tire ran over one of those embedded reflector lights they sometimes put in the road. i don't know - i never saw it - all i know is halfway through the turn my rear wheel slid out from under me, and a second later i'm on the floor. bleeding here and there, but no serious injuries, and the bike checked out okay, so i only lost about a minute to 1:15. totally my fault - i just misjudged the turn. i hate it when that happens, though. i had what, for me, was a good run going

one positive aspect of being a fat-a$$ed bike rider, though - shock absorption :D

Did you race the Groveport TT?

Just be glad you didn't powerdrive the curb with your hand and break your wrist...Seen that happen recently.

Sorry to hear about your crash. :(

If you were really exact mid-way through the turn, this would be the apex and you should be running over the gutter near the kerb and scraping your chainrings on it.... There's a saying in auto-racing, "Better go in slow and out fast, than fast in and out dead..."

Keep up the good work and prepare for the next one! :)

yeah, it was the groveport TT, nitro

you're right, mothra. i had the wrong line, was braking in the turn because i misfigured, yada yada. did it about as wrong as you can do it. i AM lucky i didn't bust up anything, although no curbs on these country roads to slam into. i'm sure stiff and sore this morning, though

Sorry to hear that! I was at Groveport as well. Great course (although I would have done better had it been more flat).

How did you end up overall?

Thats why I was never a big fan of those TT races. Too dangerous.

i was fourth in the cat 5 group. that includes the time i spent on the floor. subtract a minute, and it puts me second. i don't know about those average speeds, though. i had a course length of 22.82 miles, so averages should be a bit higher. that distance is gps generated, btw. how did you do, cat4? oh yeah - the guy that was first in the cat 1 group with the fifty minute time came in shortly after i did. looked like he had just finished a sunday recovery ride. geez, how do these people do that?

i don't think they are dangerous if you do 'em right. i did every turn correctly except one. and, to be honest, i would have gotten away with that one as well if i hadn't hit that reflector. now crits - THOSE are dangerous. i don't care to do them at all

I was 5th in the cat 4/5. I was stupid enough to do a master's 30+ crit Saturday afternoon and it stole some energy from me.

My average as posted was not what my computer said. I had 24.0, they had 23.67. Either way, it was too slow!

your computer is more accurate than their measurement.

you'll never see me at a crit. not doing them sure cuts down the number of races you can do around here, but i don't care. i think you did a great TT time for having raced a crit the day before

Are you close enough to do the Monrovia time trial in Indiana? That's my next race on July 29. About a 2 hour drive for me.

Some of the most severe injuries happen in Time Trials.
Being in a zone of intense concentration on a bike that's built for speed, not handling, is a ripe combination that often bites the participant in the arse.

I'm with Voodoo on this one. But i think he just doesn't like TTs and looks for any reason to avoid them.

yeah, i can understand that position. i think that, after doing a lot of time trials, i just got a bit complacent. and it *did* bite me in the arse. the left side of my arse, to be specific. i'll give it the attention it deserves next time

I'd be interested if you could quantify that... For example given the number of broken collarbones and other injuries in Le Tour compared to the one accident with Bobby Jullich in the the TT!

I don't need to look at my bank balance to tell me im poor, i don't need to ride a time trial to tell me im slow.

Quantify it with real numbers? Probably not.
Purely anecdotal.
But I've seen too many to say that a TT is safer than a RR.

Saw a guy slam into a parked car at a TT once. Had his head down, cranking along at 25mph or so... BAMMM!!!! Ambulance came, scraped him off the pavement and took to hospital. Can't imagine he got away without at least a couple broken bones..

No worries, just curious... As due to the non drafting of a tt means at least not going down because of touching wheels. TT's down my way tend to be on very non technical courses, so I tend see or hear of few tt crashes.

you went off first, didn't you nitro? i never passed the guy that took off ahead of me, and i saw his time was well over an hour, so i knew he had to have run off course. that's too bad, man. there was a stretch there that i was sure i had missed a turn. well, i fell down on a turn, so i guess i DID miss that one.
