Mountain Biking - What's some really STRONG skewers?

Hey guys. I was wanting to know what Skewers are the ones to put on a freeride bike.

I have an 03' BigHit Comp, which has the 20mm front axle... however it has a standard QR in the rear. I took my rear wheel off the other day, and the darned skewer is already bent (Shimano unit).

What's one that'll stand up to my abuse on it? (drops, ramps, lots of hard rear-end landings)...

I need something not too terribly expensive... and preferrably VERY strong.

A couple of good brands you could look into are Kore, Ellsworth, and posible Salsa... they all make very good skewers, My buddy has the Ellsworth skewers and another friend has the Kore ones, both guys are crazy and haven't had any problms with them yet.

Not sure how strong they are, but I just found a heck of a deal on skewers.

They have chromoly skewers for 8 bucks, and 6/4 Ti skewers for 15 bucks!

Don't get the ti skewers, those are probably built super light weight for weight weenies. Get the cro-mo.

Forgo the quick release and go with a solid axle! I swapped out mine and haven't had any problems!

However, it makes fixing a flat a beetch while on the trail!

L8R Yep, go solid for about $10. Pick up a Park Peanut Butter Wrench(SheldonBrown.com) or a Surly Jethro Thule and on the trail flat changes are no problem.

How do you bend a skewer without bending an axle? Skewers arent weight-bering parts... make sure your drops are resting correctly on the axel and not the skewer...

Honestly dude... I dunno HOW my Skewer bent...

I've been mtn biking for over 5 1/2 years.. and this's my first EVER bent one. I honestly don't get it.

My axle is perfectly set down in the frame when I clamp it back on too. I have it tight enough that it leaves a "print" in your finger, but it's not so tight that it's crazy to get undone.


Should I replace the skewer immediately, try to rebend it, or just ride it?

I bent three last year without even damagin a hub until the third time. I know howmine bent though. Crapy forks with lots of flex. :)

This one's on the REAR though.

there's no way I could bend my front one.. it's 20mm's of pure strength! :beer:

I know...I was just giving an example. On my old chromoly bike I broke the skewer on the rear once...but hey sh*t happens :)
