When someone misspells your name in an email, do you correct them?
There are two common spellings of my first name. Over the years, I've grown accustomed to people spelling it wrong. I am often surprised that they continue to do so in email correspondence, despite my signature featuring my first name in BIG BOLD LETTERS. Today a new hire started. This person stands above me in the hierarchy , yet I'm tempted to correct them because when I don't, people just continue to make the mistake over and over......
any of you share this problem?

Not me per se.....but one of my co-worker's names is "Deric" spelled with c.
We worked together on a project where our lead would send out emails to us together and every time he sent an email Deric was spelled differently.
Derik
Derick
Dericc
Dereck
Derek
etc....
We both used to laugh at how bad the lead's spelling ability and ability to remember things and be a "people person" were.

I have a first and last name that are commonly misspelled and mispronouced... oh well, if it's important I will correct if not, then I don't. Or what I have commonly done is when I get a chance, away from others I will say "btw, my name is...." Usually the person is grateful. Also if meeting someone in person, I always extend my hand and say my name first, so the person doesn't have to think or try to say my name (wrong). If the error is in writing then I figure when I respond the person will see the correct spelling.
I gave up on correcting people. My first name is Allen, and there are more variations of spelling it than any other name I know.
Allen, Allan, Alen, Alan, Allyn, Alyn, Ealyn..........just a few of the spellings I've run across.

People misspell my last name all the time. I only correct them when it is for something important like documentation or something. Otherwise its no biggie.

My name doesn't get mixed up too much. I do get people (freely) exchanging my first and last names. Lucky me with two first names....
My last name is German, very unusual, and has that wonderful German "sch" in the middle. I spell my name s l o w l y so it will be taken down correctly, then I pronounce it.
People typically leave off the "c", but some wonderful variations have occurred.
If it's important, like a legal document or something where money could be involved, I'll have it corrected. Otherwise, whatever...
One of the most creative spellings occured on, of all things, an award with my name engraved on it. I guess there was no time to check the spelling!

Not only is my name ALWAYS misspelled, but it's more associated with a man's name than a woman so you can imagine the surprise and emabarassment the other party goes through when they meet me in person. I'm so used to it that it doesn't bother me at all. A part of life for me. I just wonder why some parents would name their kids with opposite sex names (mine is actually a very ethnic name that was shortened, as is a lot of American names, and thus sounds like a male name).

people constantly misspell/mispronounce my name... I'll correct anyone three times, no problem, it's kinda difficult... But after that, it's an intelligence barometer and I tell 'em... 'just call me sprocket'

Some people try to get cute and spell my name "Wil" instead of "Will". Our real estate agent keeps spelling my wife's name "Kristy" instead of "Christy". Hopefully our son will not have the same sort of issues because we're going to call him by his initials.
D.O.H. or D.U.H. ?
(Sorry. I'm sure your son's name will never be misspelled, misheard, or whatever. I just couldn't resist.)

Hell, I'll probably misspell it first!:o
People are always throwing in an extra letter in my first name: John instead of Jon
People are always leaving out a letter in my last name: Fisher instead of Fischer.
Suppose it balances...

My last name used to be very hard to spell/pronounce. Got married, problem solved. Not going to work for you, Bryan. My suggestion is that you stop caring, even though I totally understand why you do. But it's never going to change. People who care will spell it right, people who don't, won't.

My name isn't hard to spell or say but for some reason people love to call me by nicknames. I love when I introduce myself "Will" and then a couple sentences into the conversation someone is like "William" or "bill" or "billy". The best one is when I was talking to someone about fixing their pool and I introduced myself "hi, my name is blah blah" all that crap and then when I give them the estimate they said "thanks jonathan" I just wanted to slap them and be like "that's for not saying my name................dumbass"

Well, sometimes people misspell my name, especially in the Singlespeed and Fixed Gear forum and in the Politics & Religion forum. Those people are always talking about "a troll" this and "a troll" that, and I just want to yell "It is A.TROLL, or simply TROLLIE if you can't remember!!"

This thread cracks me up... My name is easy enough, but try being a twin. Instead of messing up the spelling of your name, they think you are a totally different person! It is really funny when you have an entire conversation with someone, trying to figure out who that person is, and then find out they really thought they were talking to your brother... A little awkward... :)

My first semester of college, I had about seven classes. Six of them were with this one guy. I was a lab partner with him, etcetera...
About a month later I found out it was two twins, and only one of them was in each of my classes.

My first name is Marry, and everytime I get a new credit card, start phone service, fill out a form, 99% of the time somebody think its Mary misspelled, and change it to Mary. Even if I tell them ahead of time there is supposed to be 2 "r"s, it still gets changed to Mary. Marry is pronounced different than Mary also. The "a" sounds like the "a" in car or Mark. I always politely correct whoever misspelled or spoke my name wrong. I can understand not pronouncing it correctly, but if somebody sees I spelled my name Marry on a form, they should spell it that way also. People dont spell thier own names wrong.
I even have the problem of Marry, when its printed on a credit card, it looks like Harry, and somtimes people think I have some guy named Harry's card, when im a female, and I get major hassels.
Even my last name is not spelled correctly most of the time. Its the lesser common way of spelling it, and people dont pay attention and assume its spelled the more common way.
Its hopeless.

Marry is a pretty name. Do you know the origin of it beyond the two dictionary definitions?

Thanks! I havent been able to find out very much about my name. Ive been told its Irish. My family on both sides is from Ireland, and my neighbors from Ireland say its a common Irish name, but whenever I try and do a search about my name, I get nothing. Maybe my name is just spelled very different from an Irish name that sounds like mine.

How freaking hard it to spell and pronounce Petre. I get all the crap and letters in the world ... plus some unknown mouth positions that have been seen only in the animal kingdom. It's like meter(us) and metre(canada, uk) – it’s still pronounced the same way.
This brought back some memories of childhood taunting....

I'm a rebel. I do that everytime the company wants me to sign a new policy. I will not sign anything that has the potential of allowing a write up or termination. They always get mad when I do that but I just tell them that by law I do not have sign anything I don't want to. They grit their teeth and leave me alone. :D
i go by "J.J."
people still misspell it.
