was just wondering is it better to run a thicker tyre on the rear and narrower on the front on the other way round, or if not just the same tyres. as i bough a set of maxxis hard drive 2.1s today and i put my new 2.1 next to my old nokian nbt 2.1 and they seemed to be like 2.3s.. any reason for this?

You should have fat tire in the front for better gripping when you turn.

Yeah, the fat one in front. The difference may be because of the rims, if you have different rims. My rims are wider than my friends rims and my 2.3 tires look the same like his 2.5s. And I've read also that different tire brands may have different ways of mesuring the width.

well if you're riding trials, fat in the back man. but for xc, i prefer (if i had a choice) to have a wider, more aggressive tread in the front. if anything is gonne break loose in a turn, i'd rather it be the back.
