Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - my new SS plan..

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
ok, so heres the plan: I found 2 1986(i think) Schwinn world Sports on the side of the road one day. My plan is to take them and make a single speed(NOT fixed-already have one of those) school commuter. Now I live in New Hampshire, and will be at school during the winter, so Im not about to put 23's on this...Im thinking wider cross tires(because I figure the usual MTB tires/wheels wont fit)....
basicially, I just want to know if anyone has any idea what size wheel/tire compbo I should get for this.
Im going to keep most everything else "stock" on it. maybe rattle can the frame, but who knows yet.

If it's got the clearance, just throw on some fatties and let it roll.

i'm guessing you're already looking at 27x1 1/4", right? and you're switching to 700c? if so, don't worry and just put on whatever. if you're not switching, you can still get 27x1 1/4" tires easily. for 700c, i dunno, 700cx32? 32mm is approx. 1 1/4".
I dont need 700c....Its just what was in my mind(whats on the fixie) I believe the world sport came with 27 so maybe ill look around for some 27x1 1/4...that should be wide enough.
edit...the wheels are all old and out of true, im going to get a new wheel set.
Get a 700c set and use some 38mm cross tires. you should be in good shape.

A single speed freewheel is going to freeze in the winter. You should use the fixed when it gets under 40.
