In the attacks on walkers or bicyclists, police have decided that the same person is likely responsible for a recent series of shootings and an earlier one in which four people were killed -- for a total of 34 shootings. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/12/phoenix.crime/index.html CNN

What an completely useless comment. Why do you bother trying to be all clever when you could just tell everybody "F**k you" and get your point across more concisely? If you had resisted your knee-jerk reflex to insult the first person you can as soon as possible and actually *read* the article, you would see that this is a pretty scary story.

this and the other rapist/killer that is on the loose have a lot of people here in Phoenix scared...The shooter appears to be targeting anyone out late at night alone. between 10pm-3am or so. some of them (most) have been walking, some have been riding or walking their bikes at the time he shot them. as far as I know he's not shooting a bicyclists exclusively.

I agree the later response would be a good way to answer your post. As far as the OP is concerned WTF does he expect, personal notification of every "scary" story? Maybe the national news services were covering other stories.

I'm assuming that the OP was wondering why this story isn't making the news rounds so that everyone's aware of it. I don't think the OP was expecting a personal notification about it. I can only assume that it's not more prominently featured in the news is because I think there's still a blonde missing in Aruba, and of course, the story of the summer--Tom and Katie's baby.
Missing blondes and celebrities take precedent over news. I thought everybody knew that.

the OP should change the title as it is incorrect.

OK now YOU know all about the scary story from Arizona. So now that YOU know, what are you going to do about it? Do you want to know how many people were harmed in dark alleys or the parks in NYC over the last few months? How 'bout in Houston? How 'bout the crime reports from Caracas? Why do/don't you want the national news services to cover every local crime story so You can keep up?

Precisely.

I hadn't heard a thing about these attacks in Phoenix.

As far as the personal attacks here go, I don't think my neighbor to the south would ever say this crap face to face.

I think it is a fair question.
We sure heard about DC Sniper and Runaway Bride. Usually you can tell, but sometimes its not obvious why the press is omitting something. But be assured--The mainstream press is OWNED and there's big money working to get control of the internet. Good films on this are "Orwell Rolls in His Grave" and "Outfoxed".

Supposedly this killer strikes at dusk...

Well gee, personally I was just in AZ, two weeks ago, cycling. So in fact this might have been pertinent to me. Especially the part about Baseline road, which I know.

As far as national news covering every local story... Na, just the ones where 20 or more people are shot. We can draw the line at that.

Maybe Silversmith should ride the subway more often; then he can read (for free) all the news that's fit to print and not be kept in the dark.

Yes the sarcastic mode is on; some posters can't understand that neither safety nor advocacy is served well by those who relish posting, reading and ranting about each and every negative bicyclist interaction, no matter where it occurs; no matter how isolated; they apparantly just can't get enough news about dangers lurking in the cycling environment. I can only guess at the reasons for such obsessions.

Yep, a scary story and a bicycle was being used by some of the victims. Hence the apparant Henny Penny reaction of inquisitive Cyclists who must keep up on the current status of the falling skies throughout the land.

Yeah I know leave more room for all the posts about the mean motorists who almost hit me, came too close, or yelled something as well as the car collisions with or without cyclists involvement. And don't forget the outrage when a shock radio DJ says something stupid or, surprise -surprise, shocking. We need the bandwidth for every single negative incident to be reported to stir the blood and keep up the martyr victim index.

People should check this folder for the "Hit by pop bottle" thread that I posted a couple of days before.

I wasn't sniped with a gun, but I was hit hard between the shoulders by a nearly full liter pop bottle hurled at me from a vehicle going about 40 mph. The blow was so hard that I had trouble breathing for several minutes, and I'm a big muscular guy. Other people had similar stories about having things thrown at them.

I don't know what its like in Burlington Iowa (though I live just upriver) but those of us who venture off the couch will, no doubt, have their own stories to tell of yahoos throwing crap at them or of road-raging idiots nearly sideswiping the bicyclist in their haste to pass.

Yep I have had a few encounters with yahoos while cycling over the last 50+ years of cycling. I've had a few when not biking also. But I don't post every one to the Internet, and I especially don't scour the Internet, TV, or newspapers looking for more yahoo encounters to post to BF and think it has anything to do with advocacy or safety messages.

50 years of cycling... just how old are you? I'm 50 and have no more than 41 years of cycling under my belt... with a few lost years here and there... so I usually say "30+ years of cycling." (probably closer to 35 years actually).

As for the latter... hell it's a stupid internet forum... what else are we supposed to do with our lax office time.

At least scouring the net for "more yahoo encounters" is a bit more interesting than just sitting there waiting for posts to blast with naysaying messages.

Sorry ILTB, but that IS the whole nature of net forums.

59. "Blasting" is your term for being skeptical of pompous know-it-alls, safety nannys, and/or whining cry babies/martyrs who think their stuff doesn't give off an odor. And who sez "blasting" ninnies for their silliness isn't interesting?

Perhaps, as has actually been observed locally in Phoenix, these crimes were not linked until very recently. Seems that random acts of violence are difficult to analyze or dicern patterns.

It may very well be... but like fishing, I suspect more bait would lead to more excitement. :D

59 eh... gives you some interesting perspective on the way things "used to be."

I bet you remember Schwinn bikes and bike rodeos similar to the ones I attended in elementary school... back when everyone rode bikes, and there were no fancy clothes or helmets for cyclists. Of course back in the day, cars drove slowly up and down the streets and raced on hiways. There were no seat belts, and you had your window rolled down for a breeze...

Yeah, I can see your perspective sometimes. I miss those Good Humor trucks.

Yep, this forum is full of worms and chum on which to feed.

Remember sure, only things still are as far as I am concerned; no need to change just to fit the current PC conventional wisdom of the cycling experts. I still ride with no fancy clothes or foam dome and with low tech heavy bikes; and still enjoy it just like when my friends and I would ride to the playground or school yard everyday for practical transportation or just ride around for fun. And we didn't have worry wort safety nanny Soccer moms and dads fretting thatwe might skin our knee or get a boo-boo.

Good Humor Trucks yeah, but especially good was chasing down a Mister Softee Truck. Then Mister Softee meant ice cream, not cycling milquetoasts worried that the sky is falling.

Because you rely on CNN and they couldn't figure out a way to blame Bush for it? Guess they finally gave up and reported it anyway...

This is really not a cyclist story. Some of the victims have been riding, but they aren't being targeted specifically. It's a sad commentary on society in any case.
