We found a Specialized Stumpjumper Disc for $1300 OTD at a LBS.
Fox F90RL fork
Avid BB-7's
Avid FR-5 brake levers
LX front derailleur
XT rear derailleur
LX shifters
TruVativ Stylo crankset
Shimano 520 SPD pedals
Mavic X317 wheels
Is there a HT with better components, new, for the money?
Looks like a pretty good deal. There will always be opinions on which brands/components are better, so I'm sure many will chime in.
That said, I have an '06 Stumpjumper Disc and I love it. It was definitely the right bike for me, my size, the way I ride and the trails I frequent. I don't have to worry about upgrading anything right now... and can just wait until I break something before I consider a change in the basic dynamics. It's definitely a solid bike, as mine has been through a couple of nasty falls and crashes already. :) I think the bike usually fares better than I do...
Ride it, see if you like it. Ride some other bikes in the price range and see if you like one more. Really, that's what it comes down to.

Time machine!
My LBS has this exact same bike. New 2006 model. $1400. We're now in the 2008 model year. Is this a bargain???

I'd say; $1,200 would be a more realistic price for a 2006.
FYI: in 2006 MSRP on this bike was $1,600

yes there is a better deal out there, but it means buying on-line. I have this bike and it is a better bike for that price. http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fly_9357_07instocknow.htm
Buying on-line is not for everyone and you cannot go wrong with a solid name brand bike from your local LBS.

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh......... Hmmmmmmm............ No............ I'd take a Specialized over a Motobecane any day regardless of the price differance.

And I would do the opposite. That is what makes this life fun and the reason there are more than one maker of any given product in the world.
