I think he was in a very tough situation and I dont envy that in anyway. Its got to be tough to be so hyped up like that just because you are the main american on the team.

I think it rather depends on whether or not he has a relative in the TdF governing body… or perhaps he's buddies with Christian Prudehomme…

Real racers have a healthy respect for riders who have made it to the euro pro circuit. Others, wannabe racers for example, can only wish, or derive some amusement when they falter.

Only half joking! ....

I would not say it is crazy talk. In hindsite it was definitely unrealistic, but not crazy. I did not think George would win, but thought he would finish top ten. He is a good time trialist, I think the second best remaining from last years TDF, a decent climber, and a good sprinter considering the other skills. He is a jack of all trades, but an ace of none.

Discovery should have named Popo the leader from the start, and they would have a top 10 guy right now. He is not the best yet, but he is a tough son of a gun.

I think the real question is, now that he can't use the excuse "I only sucked your wheel all the way up because I had to wait for Lance" could he even win a stage?

He did last year.

But I do not think this year will be for him and a stage win.

Well let's see. Is he richer than you? Does he have a more beautiful wife? Has he won stages in top pro events you'll never even see in person? Not too shabby for a guy with an IQ of 80.

The day I start demeaning the ability of a man with as many accomplishments as Hincappie, is the day I have my own IQ examined for obvious decline.

So the way I see it(from a guy who does believe in GH). The way you all talk about him he is a joke.
No I ask you if riding in the tour is a joke. Do any of you have the ability to do it? I know I sure don't.
Have any of you had to, by no choice of your own, carry someone else to victory? Then be expected to prove yourself as the go to guy. George is of the age that he is not able to prove himself any longer(not that he really needs to).
Why all the hate for the guy. Who really cares what his IQ is. It has no correlation to his riding ability. He has won stages in major tours. He has proved to me that he is a guy I can look up to for his sheer willingness to abuse his body to try and be the best he can be. Is he a LA, not by a long shot, never will be, never could be. Neither am I, but I try to my best and that is what I want my kids and freinds to see when the look at my accomplishments.
THe man is living a life most of us pavement beaters can only dream of. So instead of hating, try looking at the big picture. He wasn't even projected to podium.

I have been around enough to find it real hard to believe that there is 999 riders in this country that could hold a flame to GH. He isn't in the top 40 of the best of the best in the world because there is 1000 risers in the USA that can ride better than he can.

Laggard

I'm not a huge George fan and think that most Americans tend to overrate him. However, I have a huge amount of respect for the guy. He's selflessly busted his ass for years, riding at a high level and doing his job well. Anyone who's spent that much time in the peloton and has done that many one-day races and grand tours deserves everyones respect.

IQ of 80? Shut the hell up. Lazy? How many of you have the will to train 500+ miles a week? Half of you losers skip rides because it's raining. Try dragging your ass over Flanders in the rain, wind and mud.

You guys are unbelievable......Firstly, It's "go george" this & "Go george" that, you built up completely unrealistic expectations of how George & the Disco's would perform in the tour.....then when they don't meet your expectations, it's "george is a dud"....un-bloody-believable. I'm no George fan, but the guy has done more for cycling in the US than all of you 'knockers' put together...Do you know how hard it is to get a spot on a pro-team, let alone a start in the tour?....& then on top of that be in the 'elite' of the tour?...nah, didn't think so. I look forward to seeing you all back on the George 'bandwagon' when he gets a spring classic (or 2) next year.....BTW Lance wouldn't have 7 TDF's without this guy. I dare you to tell Lance that george is a dud....none of you have the guts.....Go cadel!

Here's the point. George is a rouleur. You'd have to be super super stupid to think he'd go anywhere near the top of the classement.

Well let's see. Is he richer than you? Does he have a more beautiful wife? Has he won stages in top pro events you'll never even see in person? Not too shabby for a guy with an IQ of 80.

Nope - real racers know guys who have made it on the euro pro circuit, and have a chuckle with them about how stupid Hincapie is.

I have a healthy respect for any man who completes the tour in one piece - even if he finished last.
All I hear on and off this forum is Discovery sucks, Lance sucks, now George sucks tomorrow Popo will suck.
Well, I'm typing this behind the desk of a dead end job that I really don't like. So to see men accomplish things I can only dream about makes me respect them even more.
Go ahead and disrespect. But until you cross the finish line before any of them your words are childish and quite hollow.

It was simply too much to expect of George, at age 33 or whatever, to change into a GC man. If you want to live in Hope, move to Arkansas.

Very easy to call someone stupid who is a man of few words. I've never seen him ride with dumb tactics, no reason to believe he is an idiot.

I think Euro's right on this. The thought that Hincapie was going to finish on the podium was a fantasy, based upon one opportunistic stage last year. Doesn't mean that Hincapie isn't a very good professional cyclist. Just means he's not a GC guy for a Grand Tour. I don't think deep down that even Hincapie thought he was going to finish high on GC.

Again I will say I did not expect George to make the podium, but I thought he had a chance at a top 5 to 10. Insane? Maybe, but George is the 2nd best returning time trialist from last year. If he finished top 5 in the time trials, and sucked wheel in the mountains then a top 10 is not far fetched. Obviously it did not work out. I was wrong. Didn't he finish top 20 last year? Top 5 from last year are gone, so where is the stretch?

In my experience people who deride and try to cut down successful people are those who have acheived the least of it themselves. George is successful at what he does simply because he has made it to the pro ranks and is racing in the biggest event on the planet. Nothing wrong with admiring that.
