Professional Cycling - Timing and Scoring question for you....

So all the bikes have those little yellow boxes on them to keep track of time.

What happens when I see one team member give up his bike to another because of a mechanical or crash or whatever?

How do they keep track of times then, if the guy is no longer on his own bike?

That has been a problem, but it's rare enough that they deal with it when it happens. It's a pretty tall order to keep track of nearly 200 riders all strung out on several miles of road and those little boxes help a lot.

As far as I know they aren't used for official timing. I think they use them for some of times on the road and to get quick unofficial results at the finish.

Maybe its the time for that bike, and not necessarily for the rider that was riding it. The rider gets the final time, not the bike.

This what I know about the timer devices, I helped set them up at a local race a years ago.

1. Each box has its own id.
2. All boxes attached to a bike are loaded in the timing software.
3. When the race starts all the boxes time is started by crossing the starting line or auto-started in the software when the 1st box crossed the line or when the starter of the race officals all the timers.
4. The system stops time each box when it crosses the finish line.

So, all the boxes attached to a bike start at the same time and you can assign any box to any rider at the end of the race. Make since?

finish line camera still used for deciding sprints and as one of the backup systems

since we're talking about the finish line cameras... has anyone else noticed how ridiculously deflected spokes look on that highspeed camera?
