Mountain Biking - 2 New Bikes for Wife and I

Hey guys,

Very happy to say that my wife and I bought bikes for the both of us... She decided on a '06 TREK 3700since it was only $ 250 and I purchased the new '07 Specialized Rockhopper... I was leaning towards the 06 model but they did not have any more in stock since they were on sale... I am 5'11 and got the 21" frame... felt good as i was test driving it... any opinions on new pedals for the both of us? we both dont like the pedals that our bikes came with... pics coming tomorrow...

My thoughts too on the size. I'm 6'1" and will be getting a 19" hopefully this weekend. Been out of the scene for awhile and starting back up again. IRS screwed up (imagine that one!! LOL) and I should be getting my taxes this friday so hopefully this weekend will be riding again. But yeah, to each his own. Every BODY is different and likes differnt things.

Yea I'm around 6'1 too and I'm only riding 19". But I guess everyone has their only preference.

yeah, i tried the Large in the hardrock and i felt kinda cramped up... i have a 6'1 wingspan and felt quite good on the 21", haha... i guess to each its own... I will take pics today when I get back from work...

my wife's bike came with some sturdy plastic ones, and mine came with some narrow metal ones? haha... i am not sure if they are branded... we would both like some non-plastic ones with good grip, but wont tear up our shins so much when we miss the pedal, lol.... thanks again for your guys' input... ive been doing a lot of research online about sizing, but the 19 seemed too cramped up for me, haha... plus, i wont be doing any hardcore downhill racing or freestyle riding... just around town and trails and what not with the wife... hehe... thanks again guys and i promise to get pics up tonight after work...

I personally have the Crank Brothers 5050 X and I love em to death.

As to clipless though, Crank Brothers yet again is a good place to check. Candys and Mallets FTW.

BTW: I did go back to my lbs to trade in my rockhopper for a 19"... after riding it for a lil while i did feel like i was stretched out too much... if i didnt post up on the forums, i would have kept in, so thank you guys for making me think about it... lol...

I think you probably made a good call on the 19". I ride a 19.5 and I am 6' 2". I am borderline tall enough for a 21 but have ridden 19 for so long that it just feels wierd.

For XC riding you really should be on a larger frame. I'm 6'3" and I ride a 23" Giant Yukon frame. I have a 22" Karate Monkey on the way.

If your a half and half trickster buying a rockhopper, you should probably buy one size smaller. Now mind you that anyone coming from BMX riding will naturally choose smaller bikes as they are used to riding small frames. Once you ride XC for a while, your frame preference may increase as you'll feel the need to "stretch out" in order to exert the most power.

PEDALS

For XC/casual riding you should consider the Crank Brothers Mallets. The clip mechanism is semi-recessed into the pedal. They can be ridden comfortably without cleats in a "casual" setting (like paved rail trails or playing around the neighborhood). The other combo pedals out there have the clip mechanism sticking up WAY over the cage.
