ROCKFORD — A 59-year-old bicyclist riding in the midst of a storm was arrested and charged Monday night with intoxication on a road.

A 57-year-old woman was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after she struck the man with her vehicle Monday night.

The man is Lawrence Bates. The woman, his wife, is Loretta Bates.

Loretta Bates told Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies that she was traveling west in the 5200 block of Elmwood Road and Lawrence was riding his bicycle in the opposite direction when he swerved his bicycle into her car.

Lawrence Bates suffered head injuries and was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital where he was listed in fair condition.
