Classic & Vintage - Front clamp diameter, 28.6 or 32mm

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This is for my 82' trek 950, full columbus....I am assuming its a 28.6, but I am not sure. The centaur front derailleur want only comes in 32mm or 35mm, in which case I might have to use a shim. Any thoughts?

To make things easier if you do a lot of bike work, buy a metric tape measurer and a metric micometer!:D

was before a lot of the oversize and asym tubesets became available - if Columbus, almost certainly 28.6
my Limongi (531 SL) is actually a slightly smaller than 28.6 and a Campy NR FD doesn't work, I have to use a Galli on it (more space between clamp bands...)
drop a post when you find a shim that works for you, invariably anything that has worked for me has also removed the paint on the frame when I've pulled the FD for maintenance.
I think Shimano supplies a shim with some of their FDs, but I've not ever found one (not looked real hard, just went with an FD that fit - if it works, I'm not picky)
