One thing I noticed as Landis limped through the final kilometers of today's stage is that his ear piece had came out of place. Did he:
a) Remove it out of disgust at his performance
b) Remove it to avoid listening to the screams of his coach
c) It just fell out

I still hope we see him at tomorrow's start but I doubt he will be there.

Little bit of A and B. Why wouldn't he be at the start tomorrow? By the time they hit Paris he will have made the top 10. Not what he was hoping for, but a respectable finish.

What would listening to the earpiece DO, really?

Really. At that point he was probably already seeing/hearing God, don't need any static from the DS.

I'm curious why OP thinks he might not be at the start either. He didn't die. There were 120-some other riders coming in behind him today. He had a bad day, but not bad enough to quit the Tour. He's down to 11th place. Probably not what he was hoping for as of yesterday but still quite respectable. Hell it's respectable to finish the damned thing at all.

Excerpt from an interview at cyclingnews.com (http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2006/tour06/?id=/riders/2006/interviews/floyd_landis_tdf306):
Q: What happened?
FL: I had a bad day on the wrong day. The team did a good job in the beginning; I suffered from the beginning but I tried to hide it... In the end, I couldn't go.

Q: Why do you think it happened?
FL: Er, sometimes you don't feel well. Sometimes it's on the wrong day - today was not a good day to have a bad day... What can I say...

Q: What are you thinking about now?
FL: Stage 18, 19... whatever it is (half-laughs, referring to the time trial)
