Hey, just joined this forum and spent quite a bit of time reading through the posts here. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can find the specs for my bike online. I've done a number of google searches and have come up with nada.

Here's some backround info, back in '96 I bought a Trek 830 Mt. Track XC (22.5" frame) It's been rarely used and is still in almost perfect condition. I really like the feel of this bike, but some of the components are severely lacking. My plan is to upgrade things as they wear out or break. I'd like the first upgrade on this bike to be the fork. It's currently non suspension, so I'd like to find the specs on the bike so I know what to replace it with. I'm mainly going to be trail riding with it, and it's not going to be anything too extreme, but I'm a fairly big guy, 6'1 ~ 200lbs, so I'll probably need to take that into consideration as well. Any suggestions or recommendations? And yes I do realize that for what I'll spend on upgrades I could probably get a brand new rig.

you will probably want minimum travel on that frame like 60-80mm I would think. but then you have to look at changing the headset and stem I think. sometimes even the brakes, depending on cantelever or v brakes.

I figured 80mm would be a good starting point, and I know that there are TONS of options out there as far as different brake setups, headsets and whatnot. Like I said, I'll replace whatever needs to be replaced as I go along. Right now I just want to get as much technical info on the bike as possible so I can start shopping for parts without dissassemble the bike and measuring it by hand. There's got to be a website or something out there that has that info. I might try contacting customer service at Trek to and see what they have to say.

web.archive.org is a great resource for old bike specs.

A bike that old will probably have a 1" steerer tube, you can have it measured to be sure. Most forks these days are 1 1/8th. So keep that in mind while shopping for forks.

Web archive had some good info, although not too much about fork specifics. Knowing that it's probably 1" helps though. I'll try and post some pics of the bike tomorrow.

Just downloaded pics of my bike from the camera. It's 100% stock except for the handle bar ends I put on shortly after I bought it.
