Mountain Biking - gear mess-up

hey guys,
i just bought a brand new huffy bike today and rode it for a few hours, as you do! on my way home the gears started to slip and change by itself!! i know this is almost definately due to the cable slackening with use. i looked up some stuff on the internet about adjusting the gears and i got htem adjusted in terms of the end gears not slipping off of the sprocket but the gears on the middle are a bit dodjy and shift unconvicingly and not makiking the shift fully every time...HELP!!!!!!!!!

I had something like that happen to me and all I needed was some chain lube. If its new, the gears should be fine but the mechanics might have forgotten to lube the chain.

thanks, i dunno if ur experienced with bikes but could it be cause my chain is bent because i can see in a place it will grind against the gear changer on the front gears, or is that just another one of my bad adjustments?(oh and this is all in the middle gear in the front set of sprockets)

Try lubing the chain up. Since it is a huffy, just try and get it to the point where it shifts ok, there is no real way to get the shifting on a huffy to work properly.

I'm so lost...

all of the bikes that I test rode before I got my Hoss had the chain rubbing something, its just the way most bikes are now because they are becoming specifically geared for certain environments like road or trail. If you can, take it in for a tune up and tell them what you do most, they can change it rub in an environment when you least use it. Its apparently so that you can get more of what you want and less of what you do least.

With mountain bikes, it doesnt matter as much if your chain is bent than on a dirt bike, if you have money to spare then maybe buy a new chain but it shouldnt be a big problem for now.

thanks i think ill just take the bike back to the localshop i brought it from and tell them to fix it up, they're shimano gears so they shouldnt not work already!. i tried the tumeups and put some wd-40 on the chain and components but its still pushing it off wrong and slipping over gears!?!? not good enough for the price i paid for it ($280 u.s)... amy more suggestions are welcome!!!

Aside from the fact that these sentences have really poor structure, the words "English" and "Huffy" should be capitalized.


To the OP, take your Huffy back to the bike shop where you bought it and have them adjust it properly, it is possible.
