OK, bad pun. I'm looking at wheelsets and am trying to decide between the following setups:

Mavic Open Pros w/ Chorus hubs, custom built for $270 OR
Campagnolo Protons w/ 'Chorus quality' hubs for $310

I'm 6-1, 210 lbs. I'm not looking to race, just want a durable, all around performance wheelset. Though I've read plenty good about both, I've read cases of a clicking sound from the open pros. Another factor is I've read in two different posts that Colorado Cyclist is running deal on the Protons, Vittoria Rubino Pros, tubes, and rim tape all for $310 (though I haven't seen it on their website). Anyone care to weigh in on the matter?

At your weight, I would say a well-built wheelset with Chorus hubs and Open Pros would be the ticket.

BTW, the fellow that builds my wheels is in your neck of the woods. Frank Corda in Babylon (wheels513@yahoo.com) built mine for me, over 3,000 miles now and I've not had to touch them.

I own a pair of Protons, am about your high and weight and have ridden them for 4000km without a problem!!

The Protons are about 200g lighter than Open Pros, and the hubs are from Centaur range not Chorus!!

Thanks for the feedback. Dave, I sent an e-mail to your wheelbuilder - he's only about 20 minutes from me. Still not sure about the clicking that I've read is common with that rim. I will see what he says, though right now I'm leaning towards the Protons. From what I've read, the hubs are a Chorus mix, with Veloce skewers. Either way, it's still an upgrade from the wheels that came with my Bianchi.
