Mass bike parking in Japan.

"Perfect Gate's system makes use of RFID smart tags to track customers' entry and exit from bicycle parking areas. Using RFID tags, each customer and bicycle is given a uniquely identified smart tag which is read by tag readers located at entry and exit of the site. "

"Bicycle parking areas which are common throughout Japan, are often located in the vicinity of railway stations, apartment blocks and other congested areas, due to the large number of people who use bicycles and the otherwise resulting clutter. These parking areas help to keep streets tidy but suffer from high staffing costs, inconvenient opening hours and theft."

Interesting solution. Are there privacy issues?

Yes, there is privacy issues. Anyone with an RFID scanner can track an RFID chip. They aren't all that common yet, but in the near future RFID will be all over the place. Do a Google search for "RFID" for more info.

I lost the link, this came from a blog that asked the question "could bikes, cars and peds have RFID?"
Here is an example: A bike is going down a country road in fog, could an automobile have an indicator that alerts the driver? Does this already exist?

Edit for the link:
