I posted this in the general section as well. I was thinking of maybe trying a donation jar or something to help him upgrade the new bike as much as possible to try and make it somewhat comfortable. He said the back up had derailer problems and such.
What a ***** that must have been walking out of the store and seeing a cut bike lock.

I tried getting in touch with him... I grew up in Show Low, and still have family near there.. He's probably half way to Phoenix by now, though.
Places sure change.... I used to leave my bike unlocked outside of stores all the time. Sad thing is, I recognized every place in his pictures, and if I was back home, I know just which neighborhoods to patrol looking for that bike. *sighs*

That is horrible! I just dont understand people sometimes.
So, whats the best way to keep your bike safe if you have to leave it somewhere?

Actually conatcted the Show Low Police Department and sent them an email to the City Manager and PD giving them a link to here and his blog. Show Low looks like a pretty town of only about 9,000 residents. One would expect this in the more populated areas.
I've been very impressed by a young man who defies conventional wisdom and actually embarks on a personal adventure solo without a few thousand dollars worth of equipment. IMHO, when BNW finishes this journey and completes college he will go far in life. What a great attitude and spirit!

Show Low is a great town. I lived in that area for a good number of years and loved it. Unfortunately, there are idiots in every part of the world, and it seems like Show Low has attracted its share over the years.
If BNW gets back to me, I plan on sending a letter to the local paper, this is NOT how we (Yes, I still consider the White Mountains my home!) want to be known to the world.
The mountains there are beautiful, most of the roads are nice and wide, and there is some GREAT riding to be had, I know, I put many thousands of miles on my bikes when I lived there, both on the road and on the many trails that are available. Seriously, for this to happen to someone in my home town REALLY upsets me, and it upsets me that he didn't receive more help. That's the kind of thing I'd expect in a big city, not a town like Show Low. The more I think about it, the more it really gets to me. :(
