Are the Mavic CXP23 rims worth having?
I am a pretty heavy guy and I am looking at getting a new wheelset. I saw some of these for sale, great condition. Just wondering if anyone has any comments about them.
BTW, I am currently having almost the same spoke problem as PB Walker is describing here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20539)

Don't know about the 23's, but I have a set of CXP33's that make for a very sturdy wheel. I used to ride CXP21's 36h and beat the crap out of them... I am around 200lbs... with the CXP33's I could have gotten away with less than 36h... but at 200lb I am more concerned with cutting weight off me than off the bike. Got my pair in black 36h for $86.

Hi ChipRGW,

I had some wheel troubles similar to yours and those of PB walker recently, on my older bike. I spent a lot of time working out possible solutions with my (very) friendly LBS. Their starting point was 32 hole CXP33 rims, since I wanted to make this a robust winter bike that would take the hammer from the uneven roads. I ended up with the CXP33 rims, DT stainless butted spokes and Shimano Deore MTB hubs. The hubs in particular are worthy of mention as the bearings are far better sealed & protected from the elements than the nearest road hub from Simano. The result was a very solid feeling wheel set that I'm very happy with. The bike handles well and feels much more rigid on these wheels.

I have used the CXP23's w/ LX hub in front and 105 hub in rear on my cyclocross bike for 3 years and they have been incredible for me. I have never had to true them once yet. This is on a bike that only sees singletrack and winter riding. I mean I have tried to abuse these things and they just keep on working well. Never had to do anything yet to hubs, rims, anything. I have had to replace the brake pads 3 times already because of winter salt/sand, but the rims still look decent. Mine are 32 spoke, and I weigh about 175 lbs.
