Hi everyone,

I'm just thinking about the cluster for my new bike. Looks like I'm going with the Mavic Cosmos wheels, but the biggest gear Mavic offer on the back is in their M10 kit no. 3 and is a 27 tooth. I'd like to go as big as possible with the Campag Centaur groupset - a 29.

Are Mavic and Campag clusters interchangeable and can I fit a Campag 13-29 cluster to a Mavic wheel or do Mavic do something sneaky so that you have to use Mavic clusters?

(I've attached a pic of my NOS lugged steel Bianchi frame, not the latest nor the lightest but pretty sweet nonetheless.)

cheers,
Ants

Ants,

Lets see, internally routed brake cables. . .
lugged steel. I'd say mid 80's frame?
NOS, thats quite a find.
Good luck with the build.

If you bought the Campy compatible Mavic wheels you can run Campy cassettes. I am running Campy on my Mavic Ksyrium wheels and have for several years. No problem. Nice bike. I ride a lugged steel Paramount (Columbus SLX) and think there is nothing better. I bought my daughter a Bianchi similar to yours a couple of years back and it has an 8-speed Athena Ergo group on it. Mavic, Campy, Lugged Steel. As good as it gets. Have fun!

Marty I've got similar from mid to late 90s and it's still being done.Non horizontal dropouts are another tipoff to probable later vintage.

Also, try Campyonly.com and classicrendezvous, both of which generally list a fair number of lugged framesets.

Cool, thanks for the help. I want to be able to have two cassettes, one for general use and one for when I go into the mountains and need a 'granny' gear.

I'm confused about Mavic's references to 'M10' and 'ED10' wheels and cassettes on their web site. They talk about using M10 cassettes on M10 wheels and ED10 cassettes on ED10 wheels. It seems that Cosmos and Cosmic Elite wheels are M10 and the other Mavic wheels come in either M10 or ED10. I'd really like to get my hands on an 'M10' and an 'ED10' freewheel and see if there's actually any difference.

The frame is the Dedacciai 'zero tre' tubeset and as far as I can tell it's from about 1997. It was hanging on the wall in my LBS and just happened to be the right size for me. I was out looking for a steel frame and I'm a bit of a Bianchi fan so how could I not? Oh, and it was the last one they had.

Why don't you simply run Campy cassettes and be done with it? They are excellent quality and cover a nice range. I do exactly as you are thinking, running a 12-25 on the flat land and a 13-29 in the hills. Only I bought two sets of wheels so don't have to change the cassettes. Just swap out the wheels.
