Is anyone who frequents this forum knowledeable about
South Carolina and what might be a commuter friendly
town(quiet) just outside a metropolitan type area ?
Is there such a place ? Preferably in the north western
part of the state but open to all suggestions.......
Thanks in advance !

I am not well versed in SC but I work there quite a bit and do take a bicycle with me. I can tell you for a fact the Charleston area ain't it! I have heard good about Greenville/Spartanburg area and will find out first hand next month when I move over there. I have also spent a fair bit of time in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area and don't reccomend it either. I love the downtown Greenville area, it has a small town feeling but you are in a decent sized city. It is undergoing a revitalizion and it is going well IMHO.

Thank you Aaron !
My Parents live in Mt. Pleasant right outside of Charleston
and pleasing it is not for biking  !
My Wife and I are planning a relocation there in July and I want to
be car-free for this move. I have heard the same about Greenville
from another person familier with SC so I think on one of my recon missions
I will check that area out. Close to the Appalachian areas seem like what
Im looking for !!
Thanks again !

If you know where Mt Pleasant is then you are familar with Lovely Goose Creek;) that is where I am currently working. Starting around first week of August I will be on the Hyatt Regency in downtown Greenville:D Looking forward to it! Give me a PM when you head down that way. I should be in that area until October then back to Goose Creek for a while:p

^^^ OK...North Charleston ?
We know that as St. James ! :)
I will do that Aaron(PM-summer) !!
Maybe hit the Boulevard Cafe for some fried
Pickles and tomatoes !! :D
i would not recommend living car-free in SC. or for that matter, living in SC. period.
i did, in Columbia (the largest city), and it was just barely doable. entirely suburban infrastructure everywhere, and quite possibly the largest number of bicycle fatalities per capita in the US.
SC, especially upstate, is full of fascist theocrats with archaic ideas about society and urban planning. on the other hand, they need good people to try to make things a little better...

Love to! If I am downtown I can usually be found at Wild Wing Cafe (http://www.wildwingcafe.com/greenville.html) nextdoor at Barley's (http://www.barleystaproom.com/contact/) or down the street at Cantinflas Mexican Restaurant...needless to say I like the Greenville downtown area...now to find an affordable motel there:rolleyes:

Ok, I will admit that SC is, shall we say, a little behind the times. And I will further concede that Rock Hill is not nearly as large as Columbia. But I ride around here all the time and have few difficulties. Having Charlotte just up the road is nice for an urban diversion.
Also, the pulled pork is delicious.

I live in Greenville/Spartanburg. I'm just getting into biking so I can't comment on the biker friendliness of the area, but being a runner I've seen a ton of bikers on the roads and I've run some great roads in the northern part of Greenville that would be excellent for biking. I'm not sure how it would be commuting. Greenville really is a great place and there are some beautiful places for running and biking. I work downtown in the offices attached to the Hyatt so I can tell you first hand that being downtown is fantastic.
Also, if you get the chance, go for a ride near Furman University. That area up through there and into Paris Mtn. is absolutely beautiful!

Based on my short experiences down there, I would say this has a lot more to do with clueless riders either on the sidewalks (cluelessness and sidewalk riding in suburbia don't mix) or riding against traffic, or riding at night without lights or all of the above. Drivers down south may speed but they are generally a lot more accomodating than drivers in the Northeast.

I live in Spartanburg...and I'm carfree. It's a bit of an adventure but all in all I have a pretty easy town to get around in. Greenville is a great area...little larger than Sp'burg...and more open minded. Sprawl is a bit of a problem in the upstate but all in all I like it okay...ubercheap cost of living, and a pretty good job market. Spartanburg has started to try to plan for bike commuters more...bike lanes etc.
Enjoy your visit.
