Well, first of all, this is true...not just a joke.

I was getting another roll of paper for the copy machine, and I noticed a yellow sticker on the box:

IMPROVED BRIGHTNESS

Well, this was just too good to let go. This looked like the perfect sign to stick on the door of my office. I carefully cut it out, put double sticky tape on the back and slapped it in place just under my nameplate.

IMPROVED BRIGHTNESS

A couple of my co-workers came by, read the sign, looked at me, smirked and shook their heads. They are used to my sense of humor. It's important to note that these first few victims of my rapier wit all speak English as their first language.

Now the fun begins...

An East Indian gentleman walks by my office, looks at the sign, then looks at the light on the ceiling.

"New lights?", he asked.

It took me a second. "Uh ,no, why do you ask?"

"It says "IMPROVED BRIGHTNESS."

You've got to be joking, I thought to myself.

"Did you know that saying someone is 'bright' also means someone is smart? Have you ever heard that?", I said.

"Oh, no! So that means you're smarter now? Now I get it! How are you smarter now?", asked Raji.

"I don't waste time taking to you. Get out!" :D

I didn't think much of it until that same scene was repeated over several days by several people that speak Chinese or Mexican as their first language. Read the sign, look at the ceiling light.

Anyway, this is one more bit of cultural miscommunication I can store in my memory banks for a future asault on my co-workers.

I can hardly wait until the president of our company, who is Cuban, or my boss, who is Finn, drop by for a visit!

Our parent company is British, and many of them come over here for short says. On one such visit it happened to be right before Thanksgiving. The visitor asked what it was we were thankful for. Several people at once said "That we got away from the British!" Fortunately the guy was a good sport and laughter quickly ensued.
