General Cycling Discussion - I just went for a ride in 111*F / 44*C heat! How hot is it for you?

Woo-hoo! I went for a quick 1-hour ride in 111*F / 44*C heat here in L.A.! :eek: Yahoo! weather says it feels like 118*F / 48*C. I was okay on the flat parts as I was moving and the wind would keep me from overheating. But going up the mountain in the granny gear... OMG, I felt like I was going to pass out and collapse. Sweat was just pouring off of me and I drank 1 gallon of liquids during my ride.

So how about you guys in Phoenix, Vegas, and elsewhere? Is it hotter than hell where you are and did you ride in it? :D

WOODLAND HILLS - The West San Fernando Valley suffered Friday through a record 16th day of triple-digit heat as temperatures soared to 112 degrees - also a record.

And with scorching temperatures and high humidity expected through the weekend, forecasters say Southern California is set for, well, a record-breaking summer.

"Southern California is not used to high humidity values," said Jamie Meier, a National Weather Service meteorologist. "When we have so much moisture in the atmosphere, it makes the high temperature that much more unbearable.

"It is definitely the hottest beginning of summer we've had in quite some time."

In Woodland Hills, typically one of the hottest spots in the Los Angeles basin, Friday's 112 degree high broke the record of 110 degrees set in 1976. It also broke the record for 15 consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures.

LOS ANGELES -- The unrelenting heat wave gripping Southern California and the state caused record demand for electricity Friday, utility officials said.

The 22,622 megawatts of power delivered by SCE at 4 p.m. surpassed the previous record of 21,934 megawatts supplied exactly one year ago, according to the utility company.

Statewide, demand for electricity peaked at 49,036 megawatts at 4:24 p.m., obliterating the previous record of 46,561 megawatts, set Monday, said Gregg Fishman of the California Independent System Operator. Thursday's peak power usage was 46,465 megawatts. The heat wave is expected to continue into the weekend.


Time to get ready for blackouts this week. :(

It was 110 here in San Diego.. thunderstorms were a 2 miles away from me. Interesting.

It got up to 97 here in coastal San Diego. I went for a short 1 hour ride early this morning and it was muggy, but comfortable...especially when it started sprinkling. Summer rain (a rare event around here) never felt so good :)

Well we're in the same place..

I rode to Northridge yesterday at 3 o'clock(I have to, or else I wouldn't) I dumped my water on my head halfway thru, it fells better after that.

I did 12 miles in 108*F yesterday :)

It's pretty close to the same here in Reno. HOT!

I rode 10.5 miles in 81 degrees and rain. It felt so good.

Last weekend the temps here were 108*, we haven't had significant rain in seven weeks, the smoke from the BWCA fire came blowing across the Lake making it hard to breathe. The only time it's been comfortable to ride is in the morning. The best thing about living near Lake Superior is if you get too hot go to the beach and you'll cool down quickly!

I took the trailer into town, at noon, sans kids (they went w/ spouse in car to costco), to pull farmers' market produce home. 98F in the shade when I got back. Berries were fine, even the milk was. I am thinking that was kind of dumb to do w/o bringing a cooler, but as long as the milk lasts through next Sat will be OK.

96-97F for past few days in Olympia, WA but we have a cooling trend beginning today & look for high temps back in the normal 80s range this week. Rode in the heat a few times but have been trying to do morning rides more often.
