What did watching OLN get you hooked on?

While I really did find the Barbecue All-Star Showdown exciting, the one biggest way watching Tour-coverage on OLN has affected me is that now, every single activity I do is punctuated by Phil and Paul-like commentary.

Just the other night, I was at a local bar, hanging out with my friends. I ordered a plate of 3 hors d'ouvres style mini-hamburgers and fries and when it came, it was like it was just me and the burgers. The pack I was with didn't matter. It was just me and my task at hand. And as I was eating the burgers and was about to hit my limit, from out of nowhere came the voiceover commentary of Phil and Paul, saying, "I can't believe it! I think he's cracked! But you know in these situations, you can't panic. You can't lose your nerve. What you have to do is find your own rhythm, your own pace. You have to be patient and work your way back into the race." And surely enough, the burgers and fries came down and I was able to finish my dinner.

So yeah... there's plenty of interesting programming out there. But I'm hooked on play-by-play cycling commentary and metaphors for every single activity in my day.

I've picked up a few pointers from the BBQ-showdown. Also, just how fast is Astafa Powell from Jamica? I turned OLN on too early and saw him win a 100 meter dash by 20 meters.

The saab commercials sucks and got old. The Sasquatch is the best ever. But what annoyed me the most was the 20 second sound bite loops they played during the entire race. They had to make it more exciting but it was CLEAR that they ran a loop of people cheering and it lasted 20 seconds exactly. After 2 hours, you could call every cheer, whistle, scream etc. Kinda sucked.

I will admit, I am going to miss this. I am proud to say tha tI didnt miss a stage. I watched every minute of coverage and have no idea what I will do now. Go ride? ;)

i dunno, the older i get the more meat is starting to turn me off and after watching a few of those barbecue programs i am seriously considering becoming a vegetarian :eek: .

Indeed, I found the level of commercialism crass and annoying. I was sorely tempted to download the Eurosport coverage; Phil and Paul were the only mitigating factors. Obviously, however, they had also been coached to bring up Armstrong at every turn. I literally could not believe the amount of commercials this year, both between action, and even *during* action. And, yes, I did tape most stages, so I could fast forward; however, I found even the amount of fast-forwarding tedious; nor do I like missing any action.

Apparently, on Eurosport, they talk about many riders, not just Americans; they also interview many people, not just Americans, and not just Lance is offered to give "incisive" commentary. I can't recall which climb it was now, but on one occasion, the race was interrupted to give Lance's account of a particular climb; he proceeded to tell us that he really didn't know much about it and didn't have much to say. Could they find someone who does? But then it wouldn't have the celebrity cachet that OLN is after; it is as if Americans do not believe anything unless it has the imprimatur of celebrity.

No, between the inanity and dense fog of Trout-Wig, and the vapid schoolboy enthusiasm of Roll, and all the commercials, the race would have been unwatchable without Phil and Paul. I shall miss them, if I miss anything about OLN.

Well, unfortunately, the french charge an arm and a leg for the live feeds of the Tour, so the commercials are there to support OLN so they can give us live action. Remember when we'd get only some live action and the rest was given to us hours after the race ended? Bleah. As much as I hate those commercials, I still gotta admit- without them, we wouldn't have any Tour de France. :(

As commercials have the power to attract they have the power to repel. After being repeatedly subjected to that awful jingle, every time I see a VW Rabbit I'll likely vomit.

I heard that jingle in my head as I was going to bed last night. I felt sickened. I knew it'd be a rough night.

No, between the inanity and dense fog of Trout-Wig, and the vapid schoolboy enthusiasm of Roll, and all the commercials, the race would have been unwatchable without Phil and Paul. I shall miss them, if I miss anything about OLN.

That's why I was watching the morning coverage instead of the prime-time recap. Phil & Paul the whole way through, and they talk about all the riders and all of the teams. A little Bob and Al at the very start and after the podium, but that's it.

I agree with the All Star BBQ show...I thought it was a great way to wind down after watching that days stage. I really got into the whole OLN commentary yellow jersey competition, where they would make their picks for winner of the stage. I have no idea why, I just always made sure I saw the picks...must be the OCD kicking in a little bit.

Is there a show you are now finding yourself drawn to now that you've been watching OLN regularly? 'Molto Mario' on the Food Network right after live coverage ended. I just finished Bill Buford's book Heat >highly recommended< about working in Mario's kitchens then going to Italy to learn more about Italian cooking.

I started watching the BBQ showdown when it first started, but gave up mostly because it showed so little about how to make BBQ. Congrats to the amateur winning team!

Last year I got hooked on 'Survivor', having never seen it in its heyday. I'll be surely tuning in to the Vanuatu game. And don't call me surely.


Btw, I really liked the VW commercial. Maybe I'm dim, but how many others didn't instantly get that those Wabbits were breeding like, well ... wabbits?

I'll miss the barbecue. My favorite was when they had to make their own rack for brisket out of a stack of cinder blocks.

I am offended by the whole process of injecting the meat though, and that seems to be a given for the pros. One of the amateurs on another episode was being mocked as a total rube for not injecting, but I'm w/ him. I think the injecting is just sucking up to the judges.

The whole concept of barbeque competition strikes me as wrong. Televising it is like stooping to the level of ESPN# showing poker or dominoes. I guess if one considered it to merely be a cooking show, it could be useful, but the whole contest format put me off right from the start.

I did find myself going to the only Trek dealer in the area twice - for the first time ever (not "my LBS") - to get game cards and claim my power bar. Wouldn't really call that a new habit though.

Did anybody else notice in that VW commercial the one Rabbit with the multicolored doors and quarterpanels (that kind of looked like a car I used to own in college..) that was in the center of the "pack"? I'm assuming that was meant to be a spotted wabbit..... (Is that actually a color they are planning to sell)

That whole series of commercials has gotten kind of stale to me - maybe if it wasn't about the 12th commercial featuring the pillagers... Really got tired of the cave men with the attitudes too. Saab commercials - zzzzzz. Would someone please stuff a sock in John Levitz' mouth? Yikes that man can be annoying.

Liked the Rabbit commercials, the Sasquatch commercials, the Levis commercial was pretty good too.
