I imagine The Mennonite should be doing the rounds of TV interviews.

Landis would be intriguing copy even for the non-cycling public, given the drama with his come-from-behind TDF win, his strange upbringing, and his disintegrating hip.

Hopefully Letterman will get him- always had LA on every year.

Could we start a sticky on Floyd appearances on the boob tube?:)

The silence is deafening.

there's nothing special about floyd, dude. he isn't some arrogant a-hole who survived cancer to become the greatest tour de france rider ever and use his celebrity to save the world from said cancer at the same time. he's just a regular dude. people don't want that. they want superman, and until he comes back from his hip surgery and wins another tour, he won't be news.

Sadly, that's why we'll need this thread.

If we do a sighting, or if we see he's coming up on television, can we agree to post it BEFORE it hits the television, and tell everyone what time and channel and show?

Stuck!

P.S. Ex-Mennonite. He's definitely not living the nonmaterialistic, farm-ish lifestyle. ;)

Nothing special? He's the cycling upscale Amish who completed probably the greatest single day comeback in TDF history (along with Lemond in 89') with the hip joint of an 80-year old man.

He can be made into a story, believe me

He lives in Temecula, which I visit every other weekend. I wonder if I'll ever bump into him.:p

He already is a story that I believe in. How many times do you hear about someone who gets ahead through "hard work and patience" now days, overcomes all kinds of obstacles and WINS. This is something I like.

Last I heard he's gonna host some sort of a cycling training camp early next year in Temecula.

Price tag $3,000. Yikes.

Or you could just hang around there and just draft off them :)

Landis is currently building me a barn. I swapped him for a hand made Ti hip and a goat.

I would give Floyd the benefit of the doubt. Apparently, he worked on his bike, one hand holding the bike. Didn't even have a stand, until his wife bought him one.

He is definitely one admirable guy, in my book.

it's one thing for us - actual people who follow the sport - to know who he is and admire him for that. but i'd be awfully surprised to see him get even a fraction of the exposure lance has. he's too normal.
if he's able to come back from the hip and be successful again, then i'm sure the rest of the country will jump on the bandwagon.

Definitely one to admire. But just because he didn't use a work stand, doesn't mean he's automatically a Mennonite. There's a lot more to that religion than the ability to work without a bike workstand. By using automobiles, radios, airplanes, etc. he's already violated the religion several times over.

Ok- I didn't even notice until the segment was halfway over, but they had Floyd's mom on NBC this morning. I am really surprised she agreed to do the interview- though it was at her house, and she held it outside.

fwiw - Mennonites are not uncommon here in central PA, and they do use automobiles and electricity. They are in many ways similar to the Amish, but a bit more pragmatic when it comes to taking advantage of technological advances.

Floyd is front page news in the papers here.

The fact that he stepped OUT of a religion for a personal pursuit is astounding and admirable.

Not to turn this into a religious discourse, but I'm really admiring his accomplishment on a couple of different levels.

I'm trying to figure out how surviving cancer and winning 7 Tour de Frances qualifies you as an arrogant a-hole, but it's not happening. Maybe I find Lance's story too inspiring.

Get sick and then get your health back 'dude'. Then call me in the morning and let me know how you still feel about Lance.

From many Lance stories I've read, I have to agree that he seems like he might be an *****. Just because you overcome a life-threatening disease to win one of the worlds most challenging competitions several times in a row doesn't mean you can't be an "arrogant a-hole".

Not really a Floyd siting, but some morning show (I forget which now) had a snippet on how his hometown has become a PA hotspot overnight. They showed his parents' house, with all their 'tour de floyd' signs.

Thanks, must watch!

What is rather endearing to the general public in Floyd's case is his everyday approachable nice guy manner, a certain humble nature(hope he hasn't changed since winning the Tour :) ), which is refreshing when compared to some of the cockiness one often finds in successful athletes/persons, and later misunderstood as an essential quality for success.

until he comes back from his hip surgery and wins another tour, he won't be news.

The man has won one TdF. That puts him in the same category as Jan Ullrich. Let's not deify him yet.

I can't see how it's possible for him to have a hip replaced and be a threat to anyone next year. Any orthopods out there care to comment? How on earth can someone go through such a traumatic procedure and expect to race next year?

He'll be lucky to come back at all, let alone next year.

It's nice to have a sports hero again, after all these years. And no, I would say he doesn't have to win another race; what he did, and the way he did it, is enough.

And from what I read in "Lance Armstrong' s War," the problem with Lance is his obsessive control over the people around him, and his paranoia and vindictiveness over slights and betrayals. Floyd Landis escaped from that too, and one might hope he will not go back.

He was on Letterman last night, rode thru the audience, must say he put on a ton of weight, and was wearing a Discovery yellow jersey!

Sorry, it's been a running gag all month, he'll introduce Landis, or Hincapie, or Lance, and then this huge 300 pounder rides out across the stage with a yellow jersey and full kit, then up thru the audience, and out the door. It's always the same guy. Was trying to find to find a pic to link to, but to no avail. So no, I guess, is the answer. I'll be watching when he (Landis) shows up on Leno for real, though.

Maybe I'm naive but I was thoroughly impressed by Landis's performance. What made it special was to see that he was human one day and a superhero the next. Without the hip problem it's a riveting story, with it inspirational.

Re Armstrong, with his accomplishments it doesn't seem possible to be arrogant.

He's got to be a ******* to live with.

Ask his first wife Kik (who is gorgeous, educated, and classy) and fellow celebrity Sheryl Crow.

His son will wind up being a crackhead- so put off by Lance's perfectionism- and his daughters will be swinging on poles in gentlemen's clubs just to spite him...
