General Cycling Discussion - I have seen the light

Last night's and this morning's commute were both done under daylight conditions, no supplementary lighting was necessary.

Last Wednesday I noticed a tree that had budded out.

How does that go? happy, happy, joy, joy :thumbup: :fun: :beer:

I saw a (host? flock? group?) of robins last week - sure sign of spring.

Screw you both. ;) Still an ice cube up here.

You must lead a charmed life.....

It was 5 (count'em 5 ) whole degrees F this morning and dark as well for me.

We finally got some snow here. Makes it hard to ride but we sure needed the moisture.

I reasonably expected to read about how you bought a new Colnago.

But on the subject...We had great weather here in Greeley, CO until I started to round into form for the coming collegiate season, then, POW! a shot of cold weather and snow just to drive me back onto the trainer. I might be maintaining form but I am NOT maintaining enthusiasm.

Bwahahahaha!

Bike season is practically all year round here in San Francisco Bay ARea :D . Last week ranged 60-65 F, sunny and dry (~50% relative humidity). Will rain this wednesday-thursday, but should be better afterwards. Even had to put on sunscreen for last weekend's ride.

Although I confess I am a rainy day wuss. I hate drying and cleaning after a wet ride, so I just spend time on the rollers during winter rains.

The ground is frozen and covered with snow. There's so much salt on the roads it rises in clouds as cars drive by and makes the air taste bitter.

I dream of January 2002, when one day it hit 72F and we rode for several days in shorts and sandals.

It's been summer here for almost six months, and inspite of last week's downpour, it's been the driest summer we've ever had. Does anybody wonder why I'm looking forward to winter?

Here its finally light enough for me to be able to get a decent ride in after school, now I just need to wait for the snow to stop. That could be a problem because today I got the new tires that I desperatly needed and had my wheels trued so I would be ready to take my bike outside, and I think I jinxed myself because as soon as I got back from my LBS it started to snow like a bilizzard :mad: . Thats ok though I still have a couple stages of the 2002 tour left to keep me comfterable on the rollers.

I hate to say this but it was pretty here in Ky today and it is supposed to be in the mid 40's tomorrow. However we have had more snow than usual this year. Four major snows for this area (Of course they only ranged from 4" to 7" in depth):) But theRAIN that turns into freezing sleet is the problem around here. You can't figure out which tires to put on to ride in the crude, ice, or snow. I sure hope spring gets here in a hurry!!!

Well I took my road bike into the LBS for it's springtime regrease and tune-up. So, the good weather must be coming.:D

Yeah, yeah well I’m just waiting until it is warm enough to go snow showing! Predicted high for Thursday negative 14 centigrade! I am look forward to getting out of my cabin. Only two more months to spring, give or take a few weeks.

I'm leaving about 20 minutes later in the morning just as the sun is rising and can get away without lights if it's not cloudy.

At night it's light when I leave the office but dark when I get home. Maybe I'm just too slow.

This mid-Atlantic winter is making up for the past six or seven with sub-30 temps weeks (months, it seems) at a time and snow every week. Winter definitely sucks! Only good thing is that it is getting us roadies onto our MTBs for some fun rides over the winter. Also saw some robins around here last week. No doubt they are frozen by now.

and here was me thinking he had bought a new ewe beaut lighting system !

well for me, seeing the light must mean that I need to use the extra dark polarised lenses so that I can open my eyes on the way to work. Actually today I got away with the lighter shade ones as there was some cloud in the sky. Clouds and rain have been pretty rare this summer. My garden is sure hoping for a good winter, and as much as it will mean lots of riding in the rain, for the sake of our dams I'll put up with it.

In the meantime, still several weeks of strong hot sunshine forecast ...

why doesn't the sky ever come is another shade than deep rampant blue ... (ok I'll stop boasting now as one day soon I might just live in a colder clime)

18 years till all my kids graduate high school so i can move to arizona or other warm climes and don't have to live near great school systems.
the desert will always be there.....the dessert too i might add.
till then we shall remain winter warriors.

Heard a raucus,honking noise, on my ride yesterday, looked up to see a huge v formation of Canada geese flying NORTH....Mind you with yesterdays temps they must have felt they had left it to late. (54 fah`t)

Morning ride was in the fifties. Rode by park and heard various birds singing. Just have to rub this in until summer comes and everyone has beautiful weather while I am choking down 100 + temperatures.:D :D :D

Yeah--here's a shot of a ride in the South Bay last weekend. Very nice. However, as I type this, a light rain is falling outside my window, as predicted. Hope to get the work done I need to get done today, and go for a ride tomorrow!

nothing to complaint about winter, but as soon I see the sign of spring, I will be a happy guy again, right now I am a grumpy old Man

Yesterday, it was -6 degrees F, and we had 30 mph winds, snow, the whole shebang. today was only slightly better: 9 degrees for a high, 25 mph winds, sunny, but blowing snow. I haven't been on a bike in so long, I've forgotten what one looks like.

wow guys need to just enjoy the winter! today's commute was -15C and nice! paths were packed ice, but with the studs it's not a big deal. streeets are mostly clear b/C of the stupid salt.

sure i can't ride as much as in the warm weather, but i still ride some...

and uh, ski touring, downhill skiing, snowboarding...

having 4 real seasons is awesome (i hated having only 2 seasons in Texas and 3 seasons in Oregon - warm/dry, warm/wet, sort of cold/wet -- wasn't much better)

if winter lasted 6 months i might not like it, but it'll be spring before too long --- and there's a lot of powder yet to be skiied/boarded between now and then!

but it is cool that the days are getting longer!!! better for everything!

It hit -31 F (-35 C) somewhere in town this morning...only got to minus 24 F at my place and that's before you figure in the wind chill factor. We'll be lucky if it warms up to zero today...The current wind chill factor on Mt Washington (just a few miles away) is minus 60 F.

The furnace is just sucking down the oil and threatening to die. With a houseful coming in today for the long weekend I'll have to turn the heat up. Seems like all I'm doing this winter is working to pay the oil barons...The bike remains a coat rack in my living room, and one of my main activities is trying to keep the pipes from freezing. My plumbing skills are rather lacking, so I'm a bit motivated to keep them from bursting. Spring seems a distant hope here.

OOOPS!!! I mis-read my weather report. Make that a wind chill factor of minus 75 F on Mt Washington, winds at 80 mph and gusting to 92 mph.

...No, there will be no cycling here today.
