so heres the deal, lufthansa was incredibly easy for flying the bikes over here and the tour along the Danube has been great but now that the end of the trip is fast approaching we started looking at the end logisitcs and sure enough, our flight is with United on return but operated by Luftansa... so theres the possibility that we need to box our bikes for the return. anybody got some tips, contacts in <munich, bike shops to try for boxes before teh flight? we are in and out of the area near the train station and taking the subway out to the airport... meanwhile we´re calling the united and luftansa offices to trya nd clarify what we need to do but just thinking ahead if...

United used to sell huge boxes (including at airports outside the USA). I have no idea if they still do, or if Lufthansa does, as I've got a folder now. You'll be checking in with Lufthansa, which is probably a good thing.

I've seen people wheel their bikes up to the United desk and they said their bikes were fine for their trips home (coming back from the first annual European AIDS ride). The best thing you can do is call the United ticket desk. I would think even though it's an American airline, the people there would still have a better manner to handle the bikes, since the flight home would be operated and run by Europeans. You may still be ok.

thanks for the reply Koffee, we called both United and the Lufthansa folks (the first leg is on Lufthansa but thru United) and while they probably wouldve been ok, we ended up finding boxes thru the fine folks at Mikes Bike Tours, Dave the mechanic set us up and this way the flight thru London and then Chicago the bikes will be safer....
leaving tomorrow, back to Denver...
