Here's the deal: I bought a Phil Wood titanium on Ebay about 6 months ago, in anticipation of the build I'm doing now. Current BB is English, 113 asymmetric for Campagnolo Super Record. I want to mount an '85-'86 C-Record double crank.
The correct size is 111mm, right?
Auction description said: 111mm, Campy taper, symmetrical.
I go to put in the Phil, which is supposed to be 111mm, but no, it's a 113 and there's this little spacer mounted on the spindle that makes the spindle *appear* symmetrical. With it on, the shell is 73mm, take it off and we're at an assymmetrical 68/113 - just where I started. The extraordinarily experienced mechanic tells me he's never seen such a spacer on a Phil *and* he thinks my Phil BB is a JIS taper, so might not work at all, just to make me even more nuts (depends on the condition of the arm tapers, he says ;and he'd know).
Next up, I go to the Phil website. It says that pre-93 Campagnolo cranks should use a *JIS* taper. They sell a 111mm in JIS and a 110.5mm in ISO/Campagnolo taper.
I'm lost and about to freak. Shouldn't this all be a bit more simple to decipher? Big question:
Which Phil BB should I choose, or should I just give up and find an old C-Record BB, leaving the Phil stuff to people who know better?
Thanks
