I'm doing a favor for my friend's dad who asked me if I could repair his rusty tandem that had been sitting in his backyard for a long time. He used to ride it with his wife and now they want to start again.
It has a 5-speed rear cluster with crappy-ass shimano SIS shifters. The wheels were rusty (as of now I have stripped off the rust off the front wheel with WD40 and a steel sink scrubber and the rim looks nice) the spokes are pretty rusty and wonder if it would be better just to buy some new wheels. I don't know much about tandems, but are there special wheels I need to get since they have more weight on them? I would rather just have these wheels rebuilt with new spokes? I don't think he wants to pay much for parts on this bike so I figured I could buy a trek or something for $125 and canibalize the wheels/brake levers/shifters/deraillier ect instead of paying that much for a wheelset from Nashbar or something. Will regular mountain bike wheels work?
Thanks for all the help!
