Trek 2000

Got a buddy looking to buy a new tandem - "he's in Seattle" willing to travel as far as Portland Oregon. He wants to test ride a Trek 2000 anybody got suggestions where he could look? I am sending him to Gateway in Portland and Elliot Bay to look at a Davidson. He and and his partner are stardard sizes and he doesn't need a custom - he wants a medium small. I think he's already crossed off a Erikson because of price, he's owned a Cannondale, currently he owns a Burley, he's test ridden a Co Motion and bikes by R&E. I also said he should try a Bushnell - and buy a frame then build up the components himself of which he is a capable of doing. Thanks

Can't give you any info on shops as we are on the East coast. I can tell you that we are very happy with our new T2000. I consider it a great value for the money. Some of the tandems mentioned in you post were considered prior to purchasing the Trek but they were much more expensive. We find the bike light, responsive and comfortable. No issues with the bike .... well there is one but it's shop related ... see "one of those daze" posting. We are now riding our Cannondale and we can see and feel the difference.

He's pretty much hitting the better bike shops that I recall in Seattle. There was a shop, near Sand Point I think, that used to rent tandems. I also think they carried Burleys, but my info is over 10 years old. The shop was just up the hill from Lake Washington, I am pretty sure it was North of 520. I just did a quick search and would guess that it is Bicycle Center at 4529 Sand Point Way.

Gregg's and Montlake were decent shops too. If he has hit the other shops, I'm not telling him anything he probably does not already know.

I suggest he have a large Trek dealer get ahold of the area Trek rep and find out where a 2000 might be. When I wanted to test drive one, I was told by all Trek dealers from Detroit through Chicago that this bike was only special order (for them). If that's the case, then, perhaps one of the dealers can put him on to someone who owns a 2000 and would let him test it.

I think the frame on the 1000 is the same as the 2000, except for a carbon fork on the 2000, so driving a 1000 may give him an approximate feel for the 2000. Also be advised that as little as 3 months ago, the 2000 had an MSRP of $3395, not the $3629 claimed now. They may let one go for the previous price, or lower, if asked.

I think Mathews in Indy stocks T2000's, but that doesn't help much. As for the MSRP, the price whet up $400 from '05 to '06. '06 has new brakes, and a carbon fork, otherwise they are the same I believe.
