Mountain Biking - clipless pedals + inexperience = broken pieces

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey bikers,
Yesterday I headed out to learn to ride with some new shoes that clip into the pedals. It felt weird at first but I got used to it and my confidence went up too fast. So I thought that I could try this new trial that just so happened to be filled with rock gardens (bad idea for beginners). On this trial I discovered that I had no idea how to quickly dismount from the cool new pedals and WHAM! The bike tipped over into a conveniently located rock and snapped my front brake lever.

So now I need a new brake lever / mount and I would consider replacing the other one too. What would yall suggest for brake levers? I have a Cannondale Prophet 600 (the stock lever broke) and I like the idea of a replacement that is cross country oriented. Also I need it to cost under $100.

Stick with the clipless you will find a big difference in climbing, but don’t throw out the platforms if you like the rough stuff.

By the way disks and XC don’t mix. The disks take a beating. I use Magura hydraulic rim brakes, they rock but you will need decent rims to run them.
