In the past this fact hasn't stopped me from riding before. Those who have read the archives of this forum (and one or two others) will realise that my flu-ridden deeds of the past are legendary if I do say so myself. However, when it strikes through the week it becomes a problem.

Basically I have a duty to my co-workers to avoid spreading it around the office, so I have to stay at home from work. If I take a day off work and then go for a ride, it doesn't really reflect that well on me, so I'm stuck here all day. Some of you might get a little sick of seeing me today, but at least you can ride. I hate days off the bike.

Feel better, Chris!

I recently came to know about a holistic treatment that ZAPS flu symptoms...really and truly. I'm fairly skeptical about these things, but friend kept telling me (yeah, yeah, yeah....)

Well.... one night I was at his house, and BIG time flu symptoms comng on (fever, the whole works). Feeling delirious, I did whatever he told me, and he insisted I give it a try. Within less than 24 hours, I was completely well. lt was truly unbelievable to me. I'm now a believer.

It's called oscillococcinum. The treatment is three vials of these crystals you let melt in your mouth (no, these aren't drugs of the illegal kind!). You take each vial at 6 hour intervals.

Otherwise, chicken soup, a good book, and lots of fluids.....your trusty steed will be waiting.

Metal, I've seen that stuff in the drugstore. Is it really that effective? I never tried it. Now, i get a flu shot anyways, so it's moot.

Listen up kids. This just happened to me a couple days ago. A friend at work had a cold, and about an hour before i left work that day i felt it coming on. Every single time i get a cold it happens exactly the same way......i feel a rawness in the roof of my mouth back where the throat begins. I start feeling a certain unmistakable way that always without exception leads to a cold.

Anyway, when i got home it was unmistakable and i knew i was in for it. So i tried something i never thought of before......i tilted my head back and gargled with listerine. Did it again about an hour later. I was amazed to find the symtoms subsided within minutes and today i am cold-free!!! This amazed me because in my entire life i've never once failed to come down with a full fledged cold when i get these symptoms.

I suppose it would only work for those who get the same starting symptoms as me. But if you do, try it. I was so amazed and happy that i was able to avoid getting sick because this coming weekend is a 3 day'r for me. Getting sick woulda been a drag !

Hope you feel better Chris. Sucks that you have to stay off the bike - isnt that what sick days are for?

This is interesting, normally I just ride it into the ground (I got sick on tour a couple of years ago and just ignored it), but today, having the day off, I really feel like crap. Maybe I should have just gone anyway? or is it just worse this time. Eitherway, there's some passionfruit to be eaten.

I can attest to the effectiveness of that! It used to be if I felt as if I were coming down with cold or flu (scratchy throat, feeling feverish, etc.) I would take a double shot of Nyquil and hit the sack. Ten or twelve hours later I'd wake up feeling fine.

Now I'm on several medications and not allowed to take hardly any OTC medications (benadryl and tylenol is about it, and benadryl has never done much for me). Anyway, a few weeks ago my wife was sick and I felt it coming on. I not only gargled with listerine, I let a little bit trickle down my throat (nasty stuff) to get deeper than I could gargle. What made me think of it was I use the blue listerine all the time anyway and it kind of tastes like the Nyquil I used to take.

Anyway, it really worked! (somewhat to my surprise)

Wow !!! Now i know it wasn't just a fluke. To be able to avoid an otherwise sure week of sickness with a couple 30 second listerine sessions is just amazing. It kills me to think of all the sick days i could have avoided throughout the years if i'd have known this. I don't understand why i've never heard it mentioned before. Maybe we're pioneers, eh?

Yeah, take a rest dude. No point putting yourself on the bike when you are sick and risk taking months off the bike in the future.

Chris

Sorry you don't feel good.

But the hell with reflections. Get out and ride a little the fresh air will do more to cure you that a store full of pills.

Maybe first try some hot soup and a little whiskey then take a nap and hope you sweat.

Thanks all. Last night was terrible, but at least it's over now. Something was playing havoc with my body temperature, I was shivering under thick blankets on a warm Queensland night, yet sweating profusely at the same time. :( . I also had to put up with diahorrea, vomitting and extreme stomach pains (quite often all three at once).

Yeah, OK, I know I'm being a wuss, but I don't get sick that often and it really sucks. Anyway, I better go and see if I can keep breakfast down.

BTW, I'm too lazy to find and post a picture of a passionfruit, basically the ones I grow are yellow when ripe, have a hard outer shell and the sweetest tasting pulp in the world.

For me, it was UNBELIEVABLE!! My friend, who turned me on to it, has been telling me the same for years.

Don't know if getting a flu shot makes it moot or not. I got my first flu shot this year (Oct) but had flu symptoms anyway in late January. Also, had a nasty respiratory thing for six weeks. Meanwhile, I RARELY get sick, so I may NOT be getting the flu shot next year.

Perhaps I could, except that the doctor has basically ordered me off the bike until at least Monday  . Apparently I've got some kind of food poisoning and he expects it will take that long to clear up. At the moment, getting up to sit at the computer feels like hard work.

Nor have I been able to successfully eat anything yet today, as none of it stays down long enough.

Food poisoning that sucks!!! I got the 24 hour version of that I was hackin' all time... I'm sure you want to know that, I wonder if charcoal would help. Cayenne might help but then again with your stomach outa wack it probably wouldn't be a good thing. Anyway, get better.

This is why I basically avoided this thread since I first saw it crop up. I had the feeling it would be celebration of past sicknesses or an orgy of self pity about not being able to ride.

:crash:

 (Been there, done that, Chris -- good one.)
