Mountain Biking - Rocky Mountain Albatross-OWNER? (RM6)-are you missing one?

nine months back I saw an RM6 for sale at a flea market, I ifgured it was stolen but I could do a good deed by buying it and returning it to the owner through Rocky Mountain's records.

Was I ever wrong...

Rocky mountain was hostile to my inquiry and said they don't keep records beyond six months. I called other times hoping for a different answer but it seems to be a real policy.

Nice job guys...$3500 dollars for a bike and you can't keep a name on file, or even be bothered to know which shop sold it. My shop has records going back fifteen years.

But it isn't just RM, Big Wheel bikes in Gtown, which is the local dealer, was, if it is even possible, less help. Not giving a damn seems to go along with these bikes.

Anyway...
Then I posted it on ride monkey and few other sites looking for the owner, or anyone who might know the owner.

I got back positive comments but no one knew anyone missing a bike.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME HERE?

large? 2001? grey, black rocky mountain rm6 with riesse trixxy forks, nokian tire, dragon, vans, etc stickers. red shifter (rear) front brake and lever are gone.

I have the serial number but will hold onto that for confirmation.

For now, I am stuck with this giant bike in my house...

Just keep it or sell it. The owner obviously doesn't care enough to be looking around.

Maybe he has been looking around. Thank you for your concern. If anyone jacked my bike, I would be eternally grateful to people like you. My bikes are registered with NBR and with the LBS. But then again I never EVER leave them alone. Even while I am at work they are locked up in the house with my heavy chain.

Damn nice deed, I wish you were in the NY area when I had three bikes and a BBCue grill (all chained together) stolen as a whole.

I keep my bikes locked in the garage here in Texas.
Texas law states it is legal to shoot anyone in order to protect or retrieve you property.

The grey Rm6 is year 2000. I had one for six years and never registered my name with Rocky...

It's now old enough and beat-up enough that a flea market is probably the only place I could sell it. If it HAD been stolen in the last few years I had it, knowing what I know about it's declining health, I would have just bought a new one and reported the theft to no one.

If none of your local police have records of a theft, I say you're now the owner of a turn-of-the-century DH bike.

Hey man you've done way more than anyone could expect on this good deed. I'd donate it to charity or sell it out right at this point. It's not like you didn't try all the avenues...

Just give it to someone deserving so they too will fall in love with the sport. Props to you man...not many people would go through all that.

I found my stolen bike at a flea market once. I tossed my leg over it and flipped my ****, threatened to call the police, etc. They let me roll off with it.
You should have done the same, buying the bike just encourages more theft. Good luck and kudos to the sentiment.

could someone answer this: I'm not sure which law this falls under, i've heard in this situation you could be guilty of receiving stolen property, as possession is 9/10 of the law so it doesn't matter that you knew it was stolen or not. But i've also heard that in most cities, the police say that you have to try to find the owner (post classified ads etc...) for about 2 weeks then its yours. anyone know which is right?
